Makromarkt (official spelling: MakroMarkt ) was the brand for a retail chain for electrical and electronic devices, software and music from ProMarkt Handels GmbH , based in Berlin .

history

The MakroMarkt brand was developed by the ProMarkt company in Bremen at the end of the 1980s , because at that time three other companies in the same industry were trading under the ProMarkt name ( REWE Unterhaltungselektronik GmbH in Cologne , Foto-Radio-Wegert in Berlin and Phora Wessendorf in Mannheim ).

Promarkt Bremen had the rights to the name ProMarkt for northern Germany and Austria. Phora Wessendorf held the naming rights for southern Germany and Luxembourg , the Wegert group the rights for eastern Germany and Rewe the rights in western Germany.

In 1998, Promarkt Handels GmbH bought the Bremen ProMarkt chain and the Phora Wessendorf branches .

From this point on there were only two companies that had the rights to the name "ProMarkt":

  • Foto-Radio-Wegert Filial GmbH & Co. KG in Berlin (all branches in northern, southern and eastern Germany as well as Austria and Liechtenstein)
  • REWE Unterhaltungselektronik GmbH

Until 2003, the MakroMarkt brand was only used in the areas in which REWE Unterhaltungselektronik GmbH held the naming rights in stationary retail.

After ProMarkt Holding GmbH & Co. KG was split into Foto-Radio-Wegert Filial GmbH & Co. KG and ProMarkt Handels GmbH in 2003, the existing ProMarkt stores were renamed MakroMarkt. The renaming enabled the company to be advertised nationwide on TV, radio and in the print media. In addition, the markets were to be distinguished from the Rewe branches.

Some branches that were not profitable were closed unexpectedly (Villingen-Schwenningen, Passau). Other branches, whose rental contracts could not be terminated, were renamed Ypso, the staff reduced and the inventory drastically reduced. Remnants and exhibits from the remaining macro markets were marketed in the houses and the operator's obligation towards the landlords was fulfilled at the same time.

Nevertheless, it was not achieved to come into the profit zone, neither with advertising media such as Dieter Bohlen , nor with sensational special sales campaigns for milk, detergents, surprise eggs, peanuts or cat food.

In contrast, ProMarkt Online GmbH , which emerged from the yagma.com web shop , was in the black during this period .

MediMax

In January 2006, the 48 macro stores that still existed after the restructuring joined the MediMax franchise brand from EP: ElectronicPartner . 32 stores remained owned by Promarkt Handels GmbH, the rest are operated by EP itself and other franchise partners.

At the beginning of 2008, the remaining 27 stores of Multi-Media ProMarkt Handels GmbH filed for bankruptcy. Fifteen stores continued under promarkt.de .
