Hermann of Verden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermann von Verden (* around 1110; † August 11, 1167 near Rome ) was Bishop of Verden . Its origin from the Welf ministerial family Behr is rejected by recent research. From 1138 at the latest he was curator in Halberstadt cathedral chapter , later he was also archdeacon there .

After taking up his office as bishop, he found himself involved in disputes with the Corvey abbot Wibald von Stablo over estranged goods and with the archbishop of Bremen Hartwig I. von Stade over the demarcation of the boundary between the two dioceses. The latter are to be seen in connection with Hermann's ambitions to usurp the Slavic mission . He even forged a founding document for the Diocese of Verden, which allegedly went back to Charlemagne , and which awarded it large areas of the East Elbe. After the founding of the Ratzeburg diocese , Hermann renounced these areas.

During his term of office there was still an agreement between Friedrich I Barbarossa and Heinrich the Lion . As a result, Bishop Herrmann, like all Verden bishops under Henry the Lion, was closely tied to the Hohenstaufen court . He therefore saw his most important task in the Reichsdienst. Hermann was one of the emperor's closest advisers. He took part in several Italian expeditions part Barbarossa and was as imperial legate active in Spain and Italy. No Verden bishop ever had such political importance as he.

Ten days after Barbarossa's coronation as emperor, Hermann died on August 11, 1167 near Rome of an epidemic, presumably malaria .
