Suitbert (Verden)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Suitbert (also Suiebert , Swibert , Swibrecht ) († around 800 ) is said to have been the first bishop of Verden and is a saint of the Catholic Church.

There is no reliable news about him. He is said to have been an Anglo-Saxon and initially a monk in the Amorbach monastery . He is said to have been sent by Charlemagne in 786 as a bishop to northern East Westphalia . His name was mentioned in a document attributed to Karl. But this is a forgery from the 12th century. The background was that Bishop Hermann von Verden had a false early history of the diocese constructed in order to fend off claims of the archdiocese of Bremen . So there may never have been such a bishop.

He was previously venerated as a saint in the Diocese of Osnabrück . His feast day was April 30th, later it was May 11th.
