Life

Ascent to Bishop of Verden

He came from the Lower Saxon noble family Landsberg (also Landesbergen , not to be confused with the Westphalian family of the same name ). His father was Ulrich von Landsberg . Berthold von Landsberg enrolled on May 17, 1454 to study at the University of Rostock. He studied law and became a doctor of both rights. Landsberg became canon in Verden and in 1464 cathedral dean . Since 1468 he was because of the age-related sickness of Bishop John III. von Asel was the actual head of the monastery. In 1470 the cathedral chapter urged Bishop Johann to resign from office. Berthold von Landsberg chose it in its place. This choice was confirmed by Pope Paul II .

Bishop of Hildesheim

In 1472, with the support of the city of Hildesheim, he was involved in making his cousin Henning vom Haus against various opposing candidates as Bishop of Hildesheim. This led to a feud. Since Henning von Hus could not prevail against the nobility and the cathedral provost and there were further armed conflicts with Braunschweig and Hesse, he resigned in 1481 in favor of Berthold. Upon request, this was confirmed by the Pope. With papal approval, he was also able to manage the Verden monastery as administrator.

Big feud

He tried to solve the financial problems in the diocese of Hildesheim with new taxes. This led to serious conflicts with the city of Hildesheim in the "Great Feud" in 1484. The Hildesheimers captured vassals of the bishop, among others. Berthold used church punishments such as ban and interdict . Still, he had to give in. As a result, the citizens of Hildesheim began to strengthen the city's fortifications. The citizens did not obey the bishop's order to restore the walls to their old state. The war that broke out again was accompanied by destruction and looting on both sides. A settlement and a peace agreement was not reached until 1486. Still, there were other tensions.

Internal and external politics

With the strongest enemy of his predecessor , Duke Wilhelm von Braunschweig , Berthold signed a twenty-year alliance agreement. However, it soon became apparent that Braunschweig did not support Berthold in his disputes with the pen nobility.

Various north German cities united against their sovereigns. Hildesheim was among these. The cities of Braunschweig and Hildesheim were victorious in 1483 against Duke Heinrich von Braunschweig near Bleckenstedt .

Because of the unjustified papal ban against the dioceses of Hildesheim and Verden, Berthold traveled to Rome in 1488 . He did not succeed in bringing the nobility under control. The hustle and bustle of a nobleman from the Schwicheldt family led to the Pope again banning the Hildesheim church in 1500.

In 1493 he concluded a protection treaty with the Archbishopric of Bremen, also for a period of twenty years . The alliance could not be maintained under Archbishop Johann Rode .

Promotion of ecclesiastical and cultural life

Because of the troubled conditions in Hildesheim Abbey, Berthold mostly resided at Rotenburg Castle in Verden Abbey. Berthold was a supporter of church life. In this way he protected the cult of the Eucharist , the veneration of St. Anne and the diocesan patron. During his time there was a reform of the monasteries, for example of Isenhagen , Ringelheim and Grauhof . He was also a patron of art and history. In particular, the new building of the nave of the Verden Cathedral falls during his time . He was buried there too. The bronze plate of the deceased is preserved and tells about the death of the bishop on the day before Ascension Day 1502.
