Daniel von Wichtrich OCarm (also from Wichterich and Latinized de Victoriaco , family name probably "Schwan"; * around 1290 in Oberwichterich , today in Euskirchen , North Rhine-Westphalia ; † March 7, 1364 in Cologne ) was a Catholic clergyman and from 1342 bishop of Verden .

Life

Daniel von Wichtrich received his training from the Carmelites in Cologne . There he became a theology teacher as well as definitor and finally on September 8, 1316 provincial of the German religious province . However, in this office, he remained only a short time since moving to Paris was about at the local university was the first German to Carmelite theologiae doctor to do a doctorate .

From 1320 Daniel von Wichtrich was auxiliary bishop in Trier until 1338 , and from 1322 also in Metz . In 1329 and 1342 he is recorded as auxiliary bishop in Strasbourg .

On November 27, 1342 he was by Pope Benedict XII. appointed Bishop of Verden . His predecessor Johannes Hake was urged by the cathedral chapter to leave the diocese and so the Pope looked for a successor whom he considered more assertive. However, the cathedral chapter did not want to recognize him either, but supported the canon Got (t) fried von Werpe. Daniel felt compelled to break the resistance of the chapter by force of arms, and the southern end of Verden went up in flames. He pulled large sums of money out of the country, spent them abroad and thus drove the diocese into ruin , as well as through robbery and feuds , until in 1356 - to save his life - he voluntarily went into exile in Cologne. He was viewed by the inhabitants of the bishopric of Verden as a punishment from God and years later on the day of his death in Verden he was publicly cursed , among other things with the distich :

"Daniel undipes, non curat clerus, ubi stes
Sis ubicumque velis, modo non sis in coelis"

Daniel von Wichtrich was honored in Cologne, represented Archbishop Wilhelm von Gennep several times, and in 1363 he also received an important commission from the Holy See . He spent his twilight years in the Altenberg Abbey , where he was buried among the Cologne auxiliary bishops.

coat of arms

His bishop's coat of arms contained an owl in the upper right field and a striding raven in the lower left .
