Thomas Vogtherr (born August 19, 1955 in Berlin-Steglitz ) is a German historian . Since 2001 he has been teaching as a professor for the history of the Middle Ages at the University of Osnabrück .

Life

Thomas Vogtherr attended elementary school II “Sternschule” in Uelzen from 1962 to 1966 and the Herzog-Ernst-Gymnasium Uelzen from 1966 to 1973 . He passed the school leaving examination in 1973. He then studied history, German literature and Eastern European history at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel from 1973 to 1982 and received his doctorate there in 1982 with the thesis “Economic and social change in the Lüneburg landed gentry during the late Middle Ages”, supervised by Hans Eberhard Mayer . From 1983 to 1985 he trained as an archivist at the Marburg Archive School . After brief employment from May to October 1985 as an archive assessor at the Lower Saxony State Archives in Stade , he worked from 1985 to 1993 at Kiel University. He was a scholarship holder at the Historical College in Munich in 1989/90. In his research project he dealt with the imperial abbeys of the Benedictines and the monarchy in the high Middle Ages. He completed his habilitation in Kiel in November 1990.

From 1985 to 1992 he was a university assistant at the history department of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel. From 1993 to 2001 Vogtherr was professor for historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Leipzig . In 2001 he succeeded Klaus Wriedt as Professor of Medieval History at the University of Osnabrück, where he also held the office of Vice President for Studies and Teaching from 2005 to 2009.

Vogtherr has been a member of the Historical Commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen since 1987 , was the spokesman for its Medieval History working group from 2003 to 2007 and was its chairman from 2006 to 2016. Since 2000 he has been a member of the Historical Commission of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig , since 2003 a member of the Commission Internationale de Diplomatique des Comité Internationale des Sciences Historiques (International Association of Historians), has been a corresponding member of the Historical Commission for Westphalia since 2003 and since 2007 full member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society . In addition, he has been the Senator of the Lower Saxony Foundation since 2012 . He is also a member of the Medieval Association , the Association of Historians of Germany eV , the Association of German Archivists eV and numerous historical associations.

He is the brother of the art historian Christoph Martin Vogtherr .

Research priorities

Vogtherr's main areas of work are the history of Lower Saxony , the history of the Church in the Middle Ages and auxiliary historical sciences, particularly diplomacy . From 1979 to January 2019, Vogtherr submitted 12 monographs, 110 scientific articles, numerous lexicon articles, around 270 reviews and other smaller works of various kinds.

In his dissertation he dealt with the Lüneburg landed nobility in the late Middle Ages. In this way he also familiarized himself with the history and tradition of the Uelzen area. In 1988 Vogtherr submitted the document book of the city of Uelzen. The volume contains 752 documents in the period from the granting of city rights by Duke Johann von Lüneburg in 1270 to the Reformation in 1529. On the occasion of the 725th anniversary of the city rights being awarded to the city of Uelzen by Duke Johann I of Braunschweig-Lüneburg on December 13, 1270, he wrote a description about the medieval history of the city of Uelzen . The representation extends from the previous settlement of Oldenstadt in the 10th century to the Reformation of the city (1529). With Vogtherr's account, published in 1997, for the first time since Karl Janicke's history of the city of Uelzen from 1889, a work on the history of the city of Uelzen based on modern issues in urban history research is available again. With this presentation, Vogtherr's aim is to “reach readers who are not specially trained as well as their specialist colleagues”.

Vogtherr is one of the best experts on the history of the Verden diocese . In 1998 he published an edition on the Chronicle of the Verden Bishops. He certifies the chronicle “of modest quality and limited circulation”, but such a text “as an example of historical self-assurance” deserves an investigation. His aim with the edition is to "make available the historiographical text that is essential for research into the [Verden] diocese history [...]".

In 2008 Vogtherr presented an introduction to the doctrine of documents, which has its spatial focus on the (East) Franconian Empire. Vogtherr's introduction had generated mixed reactions in the professional world due to some volatility and inaccuracies. Since the published 1889-1931 Handbook of diplomatics for Germany and Italy of Harry Bresslau no attempt has been made in the German-speaking countries to present a summary view for diplomatics. With his work, Vogtherr did not want to put something comparable to the side of the Bresslauschen standard work, but rather the presentation should "show the interested person the way to the subject area, the questions, methods and results of modern diplomacy as a brief introduction to diplomacy". The first edition of his doctrine was sold out after a short time. A second “thoroughly revised edition” appeared in 2017. In 2008, he published a biography of Iso von Wölpe . In 2014 he published a brief introduction about the Guelphs from the Middle Ages to the present. He is working on the first scientific biography of the historian and archivist Georg Schnath .
