The Medieval Association is an association of predominantly German-speaking scientists and students from various humanities subjects who deal with the Middle Ages . The association was founded in 1983. It has the legal form of a registered association (eV) with its seat in Frankfurt am Main . It includes (as of 2017) around 1130 scientists, mainly from Germany. With its founding, the aim was to create a transdisciplinary forum for medieval studies that bridged traditional subject boundaries in the sense of Anglo-American Medieval Studies or the French Études Médiévales . In this regard, the association sees itself as an additional option to the representation of the individual subjects (which are mostly organized across epochs) such as the Association of Historians or the Association of Romanists .

The advisory board of Mediävistenverbandes the subjects are English Studies , Medieval Archeology , Byzantine Studies , German Studies , History , Historical auxiliary / Basic Sciences , Islamic Studies , Jewish Studies , Art History , Medicine - / History , Medieval Latin , musicology , philosophy , legal history , Romance studies , Scandinavian studies and theology represented; In addition, there are three functional positions for medieval studies and schools, young talent and public relations. The association is managed by a five-person presidium. The current (2017) president is Wolfram Drews (history, Münster), vice-president Matthias Müller (art history, Mainz), treasurer Albrecht Fuess (Islamic studies, Marburg), secretary Regina Toepfer (German studies, Braunschweig) and representative of the next conference venue Volker Leppin (ev Church history, Tübingen).

The association supports the networking of the medieval subjects at the German-speaking universities, some of which are now institutionalized as Middle Ages Studies , Middle Ages Centers or similar. It organizes an interdisciplinary symposium every two years, arranges contacts abroad and offers summer schools , a handwriting course and seminars for young scientists. Since 1996 he has published the journal Das Mittelalter , which appears every six months (until 2013 with Akademie Verlag , since 2014 with de Gruyter ), as well as his own series of specialist books (supplements to Das Mittelalter), also with de Gruyter. The files of the symposia of the association have been published in this series since 2015, but also other anthologies and monographs.
