Production period: | 1961-2013 |
Previous model: | none |
Successor: | Ford T series |
The Ford E series is a range of full-size vans from the Ford brand that was only offered in North America. Older versions were also known as Econoline or Club Wagon . The E-Series was the best-selling van in the United States as of 1980 (168,722 sales in 2007). The engines were significantly more powerful than those of European vans, so the last generation was only available with V6, V8 and V10 engines with up to 227 kW. From 2013, the model series will gradually be replaced by the Ford T series , but will continue to be produced in parallel until the end of 2013. Since 2014, the E series has only been offered as a cutaway chassis and is primarily used as a basis for manufacturers of special bodies such as mobile homes, school buses, fire engines, ambulances, etc.

The first series was introduced in 1961 as the Ford Econoline and belongs to the compact vans class , which are based on the model of European vans ( VW bus , first Ford Transit ). The Econoline is designed as a front control arm and, like the first Ford Transit, has the engine in the interior behind the front axle. However, according to American requirements, the engine was significantly larger than that of European vans of the time. The Econoline was powered exclusively by six-cylinder in-line engines with a displacement of 2400 to 3900 cm³.

Production period: | 1968-1974 |
Designs: | Panel van , minibus |
Engines: | Petrol engines |
The second generation was offered from 1968 to 1974. Compared to its predecessor, it had grown significantly and the Econoline was thus one of the full-size vans . The most important change was the relocation of the engine to the front, as had been done in 1965 with the Ford Transit in Europe. The new model could now also be equipped with a V8 engine, in accordance with American requirements.

In 1975 the third generation was introduced. For the first time, a variant with all-wheel drive was also available. The model remained on the market until 1991. There were two minor facelifts (1979 and 1983). The front end was also adopted in the Pickup Ranger .

The fourth generation of the E series, which was offered until 2013, dominated the market there as a station wagon with 15 seats. Due to the model names such as E-350 or E-450, the Econoline was already known as the E-series. In 2001 it was also referred to as the E series by Ford.
The curb weight is given as 2165 kg.
In March 2007 the new E-series of the model year 2008 was presented. As with the Super Duty, the front was redesigned.
In the course of this facelift, the 7-seater Club Wagon was canceled without replacement.
The Ford Transit has replaced the Ford E in North America since 2014.

Gasoline engines : 6.2–6.8 liters |
Wheelbase: | 3055-4470 mm |
Payload: | up to 2.354 t |
Perm. Total weight: | up to 6.577 t |
With the 2014 model year , Ford removed the E-series with the cargo and passenger bodies in favor of the Ford Transit , which was newly introduced in the USA in 2013 . However, since the E-series allows a significantly higher payload than the Transit, as well as wide-body superstructures up to 8'6 "/ 2.59 m wide, the E-series remained in the form of the E-350 / E -450 cutaway chassis , i.e. with driver's cab but without superstructure, still in the range. These E-350 / E-450 cutaway chassis are based on a slightly optimized 4th generation chassis. Only petrol engines, a 6.2L V8 Flex, were used -Fuel and the Triton V10 with 6.8L displacement.
In 2016 the 5-speed TorqShift automatic transmission was replaced by the 6-speed TorqShift automatic transmission, the power of the 6.8L Triton V10 was slightly reduced in favor of a higher torque (power now a maximum of 305 bhp / 227.5 kW with a maximum torque of 420 lb. ft./569 Nm).
For special bodies, Ford offers the manufacturers of mobile homes, fire engines, school buses or ambulances specially tailored equipment packages and the wheelbase can be extended to 220 "/ 5588 mm if necessary. The installation of couplings for trailer loads of up to 10,000 lbs (4536 kg) is possible.
The E-350 chassis is still available as a single and dual rear wheel , the E-450 chassis as a dual rear wheel.
The driver's cab is constantly being technically adapted and offers the same equipment as the F-series . The front can either be chromed or ordered in black plastic.

Cutaway Chassis / Stripped Chassis from 2020 | |

Production period: | 2020– |
Designs: | Cutaway Chassis Stripped Chassis |
Engines: |
Otto engine : 7.3 liters |
Wheelbase: | 3055-4470 mm |
Payload: | up to 2.354 t |
Perm. Total weight: | up to 6.525 t |
Since the cutaway chassis (with cabin) and the stripped chassis (without cabin) of the E-series are still in demand for the manufacturers of special bodies in terms of price and the possible payload (permissible total weight E-450 14500 lbs / 6525 kg) such as mobile homes, school buses, etc., Ford decided on the 2021 model year to include the E-350 and E-450 chassis with the new, more powerful, but more economical 7.3L (445 ci ) V8 engine from the F Super Duty series - Program and replace the aging 6.8L Triton V10 engine. The first vehicles with this engine were delivered in spring 2020.
The new 7.3L V8 unit ( 2-valve OHV layout, cast iron engine housing, aluminum cylinder heads , Bosch Multicore MG1CS019) in the "Premium" version delivers 350 bhp / 261 kW and has a maximum torque of 468 lb-ft / 635 Nm. The lower consumption, reduced- power, CNG- compatible version "Economy" (300 bhp / 224 kW; 425 lb-ft / 576 Nm) rounds off the lower end of the range. The 6-speed TorqShift automatic transmission introduced in 2016 will also be installed.
The external appearance of the cabin of the cutaway chassis remains almost unchanged and the equipment and instrumentation from the F Super Duty series are still carried over. For the construction of mobile homes, fire engines, school buses, ambulance vehicles etc. Ford continues to offer specially tailored packages.
With the optionally available safety equipment such as an adaptive cruise control , lane change assistant , lane assist etc. modern requirements are also taken into account.
