Ford Airstream is a concept car of a sport utility vehicle from Ford , which at the North American International Auto Show 2007 in Detroit ( Michigan ) in the United States was presented.

The vehicle

The design of Ford Airstream is inspired by space travel vehicles (especially from the 2001 film : A Space Odyssey ) and includes elements of trailer trailers made by Airstream . Ford also worked closely with Airstream to create the vehicle.

There are seven seats in the vehicle. The size is similar to the Ford Edge produced since 2006 . Freeman Thomas, head of Ford Advanced Design , announced that working with suppliers has resulted in an improvement by applying a reflective paint that makes the body look like aluminum (but the material used is steel ). Twelve rivets are built into the body  . The body color is blue-silver.

According to Thomas' statement was the color the same as that of the Bell X-1 - missile aircraft . This color is already used in the window frame in the concept vehicle; each window is shaped individually. The distinctive radiator grille and the headlights form an optical unit. Entry is via a flap door that is two thirds of the vehicle length. Red fabric covers the “ lounge- like” seating furniture. The driver's and passenger's seats would resemble captains' chairs, are swiveling and egg-shaped . The center of the cabin is an LED video screen that can project anything from DVDs to virtual “mood effects” such as a fireplace or a lava lamp . The screen is manufactured by the Republic of China company DynaScan Technology .

The width of the car tires is 22  inches .

Technical specifications

Ford Airstream is powered by a hybrid drive - as a fuel cell vehicle ( hydrogen combustion engine ) and an electric vehicle . According to Ford, the fuel economy savings is around 41  mpg (5.74 liters per 100 km). The range of 336- volt - accumulator amounts to 25 miles (40.23 km) when fully charged. The fuel cell extends this range by 280 miles (450.62 kilometers) to a total of 305 miles (490.85 kilometers). In contrast to conventional vehicles, the hydrogen combustion engine does not drive the wheels, but only charges the lithium-ion battery, which in turn drives the electric motors that make the vehicle run.

This hydrogen internal combustion engine is only half as expensive and half as heavy as other common internal combustion engines and can be operated at temperatures below freezing point.
