The Ford EcoSport is a mini- SUV that has been manufactured by Ford in Brazil since 2003 and is one of Ford's best sellers in Mexico , Argentina and Brazil. Ford has been offering the second generation of models in Europe since mid-2014, which has been manufactured in Craiova since 2017 .

The first generation of the Ford EcoSport was based on the European Ford Fusion . It was available with four different inline four-cylinder engines:

• 1.0 liter Zetec 8V Turbo with 70 kW / 95 PS (until 2006)
• 1.6-liter Duratec 8V with 82 kW / 111 PS (for petrol and ethanol operation in Brazil)
• 2.0 liter Duratec 16V with 107 kW / 145 PS
• 1.4 liter Duratorq diesel, 50 kW / 68 PS (only for export)

Ford EcoSport (2007-2012)

All models had front-wheel drive and a manual gearbox as standard. The two-liter engine was also available with a four-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. With this, the driver could switch on the rear-wheel drive via an electronically controlled system from the dashboard.

Since its inception, the EcoSport has sold well and regularly appeared in the list of the ten best-selling vehicles in Brazil. In total, more than 700,000 vehicles were sold in South and Central America from 2003 to 2012.

At the end of 2007, the EcoSport was revised, with the front of the vehicle being essentially modernized, making it look more similar to the Ford pickups and the Brazilian Fiesta . Taillights and interiors have also been changed.

The second generation of the EcoSport is based on the platform of the seventh model generation of the Ford Fiesta and was presented in January 2012 at the New Delhi Auto Expo . The vehicles are manufactured by Ford do Brasil in Camaçari , Chennai (India), Chongqing (China), Rayong (Thailand) and Naberezhnye Tschelny (Russia) and offered in 100 different markets. The entire model development was carried out by the Italian design studio Vercarmodel Saro in Orbassano .

On February 25, 2013 Ford presented the European version of the new EcoSport for the first time at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona . This version is powered by the same 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine that is also available in the Ford Focus and Ford B-MAX . A 1.5-liter petrol engine with 82 kW (112 hp) and a 1.5-liter turbo diesel engine with 66 kW (90 hp) are also available. The vehicle has ABS and ESP as standard . In vehicles with automatic transmission, a hill start assistant is also available as standard.

The EcoSport has also been available in Europe since June 28, 2014.

Model maintenance

The second generation of EcoSports received its first major revision in Europe in 2015. At the Geneva Motor Show, a near-series concept vehicle was shown for the first time with the changes that were incorporated into the series models in the summer. Externally, one of the most important changes was that the spare wheel attached to the rear door could now be omitted if desired (corresponding vehicles have a rear door with an indentation for the license plate and a brand logo above this area). The body was lowered by 10 millimeters, the chassis, as well as the electronic stability program and the power steering, received a new set-up. The interior had a higher number of chrome surrounds and the handbrake lever was moved to a different position. The output of the 1.5-liter turbo diesel engine has been increased to 70 kW (95 hp).

A second facelift followed in autumn 2017. Here, the front received a trapezoidal grille similar to the rest of the Ford Europe cars. Foamed plastics are now used on the dashboard and larger screens are available for the infotainment system. The 1.5-liter gasoline engine has been omitted and the 1.5-liter turbodiesel engine is initially available in 2 versions with 74 kW (100 PS) and 92 kW (125 PS). The 1.5-liter turbo diesel engine 92 kW (125 PS) is now also available with all-wheel drive. Production has been taking place at Ford Romania since 2017 .

Registration numbers

Between 2013 and 2018, a total of 77,653 EcoSports were newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2019 was the most successful sales year with 26,767 units.
