The Ford B-MAX is a passenger car model from the automobile manufacturer Ford . The five-seater van was presented as a study at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show . It is based on the Ford Fiesta and is produced by Ford Romania (formerly Automobile Craiova ) in Romania . The Italian design studio and body construction company Vercarmodel Saro was responsible for the development .

The series vehicle was launched in Germany on November 10, 2012. The production version was shown for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show 2012. Production of the Ford B-Max was stopped on September 1, 2017 due to lack of demand. Instead, the Ford EcoSport is now being built in Craiova .

design

The vehicle was designed by Ford's chief designer Martin Smith in the so-called "Kinetic Design" and - like the Ford Iosis and Ford Iosis-MAX studies  - has no visible B-pillar . The two rear "panoramic sliding doors" increase the entry width to 1.50 meters, making it easier to get in and out and easier loading of large objects such as sports equipment. In contrast to the concept vehicle, however, the production model has door handles on the front and rear doors.

In order to achieve a level of security comparable to that of conventional doors, the sliding doors have integrated B-pillars made of high-strength boron steel, which together with special locks provide protection in the event of a side impact.

The upper door guide rail was guided under the rear light, which was pulled forward to the side, so as not to create a visually disruptive effect on the side line.

safety

The Ford B-MAX has extensive safety equipment , an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution , vehicle dynamics control (ESP) with traction control , a tire pressure monitoring system and seven airbags are standard on all vehicles. These are front and side airbags for the driver and front passenger, a knee airbag for the driver and head-shoulder airbags at the front and rear.

The car is available with Active City Stop on request . This is a system that uses an infrared lidar sensor mounted in front of the interior mirror to measure the distance and the speed difference to the vehicle in front 100 times per second at a speed of less than 30 km / h . From this, the system calculates what delay is necessary in an emergency to avoid a rear-end collision. If the vehicle in front slows down, the system automatically initiates braking if the driver does not react. In addition, Hill Start Assist is available, which supports the safe starting of inclines by slowing down the vehicle's rollback.

In a EuroNCAP crash test in summer 2012, the B-Max achieved five stars and 92% for occupant protection.

Equipment variants

The car is available in four equipment variants for the market launch.

The basic model is called Ambiente and has electro-mechanical power steering, electric windows at the front and rear and electrically adjustable exterior mirrors with integrated indicators.

In the Trend equipment version , the exterior mirrors are additionally heated, the door handles painted in the vehicle color, and standard leather steering wheel, on-board computer, an illuminated glove compartment and additional reading lamps at the front are available.

The Titanium model also has 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, chrome trim strips below the side windows, a high-gloss painted radiator grille with chrome surrounds, daytime running lights in LED design, air conditioning, leather gear knob, power button for keyless start of the vehicle, Cruise control and a driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support. In addition, the interior has textile surfaces in a pinstripe look, the controls and the center console are in high-gloss black, which is intended to be reminiscent of the design of smartphones .

The top model Individual also has chrome struts in the radiator grille, roof rails, leather upholstery with heated front seats, dark-tinted rear window and side windows from the second row of seats.

technology

The vehicle is based on the platform of the Ford Fiesta '09 .

As a gasoline engine, the Ford B-MAX is available with a 1.0-liter EcoBoost three-cylinder turbo engine with 74 kW (100 PS) or 88 kW (120 PS) or a 1.4-liter Duratec engine with 66 kW ( 90 hp) available. There is also a 1.6-liter petrol engine with an output of 77 kW (105 hp). A 1.5-liter Duratorq unit with 55 kW (75 PS) or a 1.6-liter Duratorq engine with 71 kW (95 PS) are available as diesel engines, the 1.5-liter Duratorq Motor is available for the first time in Europe. The vehicles with EcoBoost engines have a start-stop system and an energy recovery system of the alternator (SRC) as standard , which charges the vehicle battery more when braking. This system is also standard on vehicles with diesel engines. Depending on the year of construction, the engines meet the Euro 5 or Euro 6 emissions standard.

Registration numbers

Since the market launch until the end of 2018, a total of 63,940 Ford B-MAXs have been newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 2013 was the most successful sales year with 16,273 units.

Awards

  • The readers of the specialist magazine auto motor und sport and the website “auto-motor-und-sport.de” voted the Ford B-MAX the most beautiful minivan of 2012 and thus the winner of the “Autonis Car Design Award”.
  • In December 2012, a jury made up of 15 automotive journalists from Central and Eastern Europe awarded the Ford B-MAX the title “AUTOBEST 2013”.

Concept vehicle

The doors of the concept vehicle did not have door handles, but opened with the help of sensors. It also had a large panoramic glass roof, a trapezoidal chrome grille, headlights that were pulled far back and rolled on 18-inch alloy wheels. It had grown eleven centimeters both in height and in length compared to the Fiesta.

The dashboard was based on the one from the Fiesta. The instrument cluster was illuminated in light blue and a six-inch touchscreen display was integrated in the center console . The car also had an electronic parking brake. The rear seats were raised by eleven centimeters, which enabled easier entry and a better view. With the rear seats folded down and the front passenger seat folded down, the concept vehicle offered a flat loading area with a length of 2.35 meters.

The study was powered by a new "EcoBoost" three-cylinder petrol engine with a displacement of 1.0 liters, which will be available in various output levels and deliver up to 97 kW (132 hp). The PowerShift dual-clutch transmission with six gears enabled gear changes without interrupting the drive force, and the study also had a start-stop system . An optimized crankshaft, a new cooling system and a specially designed exhaust manifold increased the efficiency of the engine. With direct injection, turbocharging and variable valve timing ( Ti-VCT ), gasoline consumption was around 4.5 liters of super gasoline per 100 km, while CO 2 emissions were less than 100 grams per kilometer.
