The first generation introduced in the spring of 2000 was based on the Ford B3 platform , but the models for the various markets had technical and visual differences. The vehicles produced in South Africa and Mexico were largely identical to the European Ford Fiesta, while the units made in India were equipped with cheaper to manufacture wheel suspensions, a simpler interior and a more simply drawn front section. Made in China , the Ikon ranks between the two versions.
The Ikon was sold as a Fiesta sedan in Mexico, Brazil and China . A pick-up model (similar to the Škoda Favorit Van Plus), with two or four doors, was also produced in South Africa .
Ford stopped manufacturing the Ikon in Mexico in September 2007. Production also ended in China and South Africa. In India it was built until the spring of 2011, when production of the successor to the Ford Figo began that same year .

The second generation is based on the revised Ford Fiesta '06 and is produced exclusively in Brazil . In the South American markets it is offered as Fiesta Sedan , in South Africa and other export markets again as Ford Ikon. Either a 1.6-liter Duratec engine with 74 kW or a 1.4-liter Duratorq turbo diesel with 50 kW is used as the engine. As with the previous model, the gasoline engine can be operated with any mixture of ethanol and gasoline.
The Ikon is no longer available in China and Mexico; instead, the Fiesta sedan based on the Fiesta '09 , which is also available in North America, is offered as Fiesta Classic .
In India, around the same time as the Ford Fiesta Sedan was introduced in 2011, a separate version of the vehicle based on the Ford Figo was introduced, which is called the Ford Classic there , but is marketed as the second series Ford Ikon in South Africa.
