In the 1962 model year, Ford presented a sporty special model of the Galaxie 500 . The Galaxie 500 XL had the best equipment of all large Ford models and also had individual seats in the front. It was available as a 2-door sedan or a 2-door convertible. The vehicle was equipped with a wide radiator grille with horizontal chrome bars in which double headlights were inserted. As with all Fords of that time, the large, round taillights were striking. The car had a V8 engine having 4,785 cc displacement, of 170 bhp (125 kW) at 4200 min -1 n gave..

In 1963, the large Ford models had a slightly concave grille with a chrome-plated mesh, in the middle of which was a large emblem. There were four versions of the Galaxie 500 XL: a 4-door sedan and a 2-door hatchback coupé were added to those already known from the previous year. The new Challenger -V8 engine had 4736 cc and made 195 bhp (143 kW) at 4,400 min -1 .

In 1964 there were few changes in the styling, the rear was slightly redesigned. Technically there were 3 engine variants, 4736 cm³ displacement with 195 bhp (143 kW) power, 5768 cm³ displacement with 250 bhp (184 kW) power and 6398 cm³ displacement with 300/330 bhp (220/240 kW) power.

In 1965 the large Ford models were completely redesigned. Instead of the twin headlights lying next to each other, there were now superimposed ones that delimited the wide radiator grille on both sides. The Galaxie 500 XL was only available as a 2-door hardtop coupé or a 2-door convertible. The engine output was 200 bhp (147 kW) at 4,400 min -1 increased. As an option, there was also the 427er engine with 6997 cc capacity and, with twin carburettors with 616 bhp (453 kW) at 7,000 min -1 or quadruple carburetor with 657 bhp (483 kW) at 7,500 min -1 .

In 1966, the radiator grille was given a horizontal, wide chrome bar in the middle. Instead of the hardtop coupé, the hatchback coupé was offered again.

In 1967 the radiator grille got a second chrome rod and the upper headlights got small sheds.

In 1968 a major facelift was planned again. The front of the vehicle was given a slight V-shape so that the center line and the vehicle corners in the indicators were drawn slightly forward. The twin headlights were next to each other again. There was also a slight “hip swing” over the rear wheel cutouts - the famous “Coke Bottle Design”. The old Challenger -Motor had been served and it was replaced by a new V8 with 4,948 cc engine, the 210 bhp (154 kW) at 4,000 min -1 . performed. The 427 engine was no longer available this year.

In 1969, the last year of the Galaxie 500 XL, the grille was straight again and surrounded by a solid chrome frame. Besides the known V8, whose power at 220 bhp (162 kW) at 4600 min -1 . had increased, there was also a six-cylinder engine with 4096 cc and 155 bhp (114 kW) at 4,000 rpm only this year -1 .

In these eight years, 435,934 Galaxie 500 XL were created.

In the 1970 model year, the XL became an independent series. Again, there were styling changes: the radiator grille was now completely black and had a protruding middle section and pronounced vehicle corners. In contrast, the remaining sections of the radiator grille with the double headlights were set back. The V8 engine of the last Galaxie 500 XL was delivered unchanged, the six-cylinder engine had been omitted.

In the following year, the sports version of the Galaxie 500 was discontinued without replacement. In 1970, 33,599 Ford XL were produced.
