When it was launched on the market in May 2008, the Kuga was powered exclusively by the 2.0-liter Duratorq TDCi turbodiesel with common rail technology from the cooperation with Peugeot , which has been used in the Ford C-MAX and other Ford vehicles since 2003. Models as well as in the Volvo S40 / V50 . This has an output of 100 kW (136 hp) at 4000 rpm and a torque of 320 Nm (with overboost 340 Nm) at 2000 rpm.

The 1573 kg car has a standard six-speed gearbox and either front or all-wheel drive (4 × 4 with electronically controlled power distribution, 40 kg additional weight). The all-wheel drive version costs € 2000 extra. The average consumption (combined) is 6.1 liters of diesel per 100 km (front-wheel drive, version 2 × 4) and 6.4 liters (all-wheel drive 4 × 4) according to the factory. The associated CO 2 emissions are 159–169 g / km (Euro 4 with particle filter). In a test of the Kuga 4 × 4 (AutoBild No. 22/2008) the car consumed 7.5 liters per 100 km. The maximum speed of the 2 × 4 is 182 km / h (180 km / h; all-wheel drive 4 × 4); Acceleration from 0-100 km / h takes 10.6 seconds (4 × 4; 10.7 seconds).

Since the end of 2008, a 2.5-liter Duratec gasoline engine was also available for the Kuga. This engine is a throttled variant of Volvo's five-cylinder turbo engine , which was also used in the Ford Focus, S-MAX and Mondeo models. In the Kuga it develops 147 kW (200 hp) at 6500 rpm and has a torque of 320 Nm at 1600 rpm. A five-speed automatic transmission was optionally available for this engine. According to the factory, the top speed is 210 km / h with an acceleration of 0-100 km / h in 8.2 s.

In March 2010, the 2.0-liter TDCi engine with 100 kW was replaced by a 2.0-liter TDCi engine in two output levels: the smaller one has 103 kW (140 hp), the larger 120 kW (163 hp ). Both engines were also available with the new Powershift dual clutch transmission. The gasoline engine remained unchanged.

Since the beginning of 2011, the gasoline engine has also complied with the Euro 5 emissions standard.

In October 2012, the last copies of the first Kuga generation rolled off the assembly line.

Equipment

The two equipment variants Trend and Titanium have ESP , ABS with EBD and a rollover prevention system ( ARM - Anti Rollover Mitigation ) as standard . Both versions have a two-part tailgate as access to the 410 to 1405 liter trunk, fog lights and four power windows. The Titanium equipment also includes, among other things, a cruise control system , instead of the standard air conditioning system, one with automatic temperature control separately for driver and front passenger, windshield wipers with rain sensor and 17-inch alloy wheels. A heated windscreen, a panoramic glass roof, an auxiliary heater and a navigation system from Ford (DVD with 7 inch color screen) or alternatively from Blaupunkt (TravelPilot with 5 inch color screen) are available as special equipment . A spare wheel is available instead of the tire repair kit for a surcharge .

In summer 2011, which was Titanium -Facilities upgraded, including there was now LED - daytime running lights and headlamps with projection lenses optics as standard. Since then there has also been the even more extensive Individual equipment line , which can be recognized from the outside by a large roof spoiler and the “Ford Individual Styling Kit”. This included wider wheel arches, side skirts and bumpers painted in the vehicle color with integrated, silver-colored underride protection as well as silver side moldings. The car has front and rear parking sensors , aluminum pedals , carpet floor mats front and rear, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Leather upholstery made of full-grain Capretto leather, optionally in black or beige, was only available for the Individual equipment.

In Europe, the market launch took place on March 9, 2013, with the model being presented for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2012. The vehicles for the European market are built in the Spanish plant Almussafes near Valencia.

The luggage compartment of the second Kuga generation is 46 liters larger than its predecessor. In addition, the folded rear seats, together with the height-adjustable luggage compartment floor, form a flat loading surface throughout.

In Geneva, the vehicle was equipped for the first time with an automatically opening tailgate with a foot sensor. For this purpose, a sensor is attached under the rear bumper, which detects the foot movement of a person standing directly behind the vehicle and then unlocks and electrically opens the tailgate. It is not necessary to set down heavy or bulky objects to open the tailgate.

At the end of 2016, a comprehensively revised facelift version of the Kuga appeared with the 2017 model. This differs primarily through a new front design that is similar to the Ford Edge and greatly modified rear design as well as additional assistance systems that can be integrated (e.g. adaptive cruise control including collision warning, optimized Active City Stop, lane and blind spot assistant, traffic sign recognition) still changed steering characteristics and larger equipment scopes from the previous version. In addition, the dashboard has been made clearer and more modern and the third generation of the Ford SYNC infotainment system has been introduced. Despite the significantly upgraded equipment, the starting price of the facelift model remained constant.

Equipment variants

The Kuga is available in five different equipment variants, "Trend", "Titanium", "Cool & Connect", "ST-Line" and "Vignale", as well as the special equipment "Black & Silver". In Switzerland, the Trend equipment line is sold as “Carving”.

The "Trend" version offers sports seats, air conditioning, the Ford Power-Start function with starter button, front and rear electric windows, CD radio with remote control, a steering column that can be adjusted in height and range, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, fog lights, daytime running lights and a shared one Foldable rear bench with adjustable backrests.

The "Titanium" equipment also has leather-fabric upholstery with adjustable lumbar support on the driver's side, two-zone automatic air conditioning, an automatically dimming interior mirror, windscreen wipers with rain sensor, cruise control system, headlights with day / night sensor, the rollover protection system RSC ( "Roll Stability Control"), a rear center armrest with integrated cup holders and 17-inch alloy wheels. In addition, the Ford SYNC voice-activated connectivity system is standard on vehicles with Titanium equipment.

Since the model update, the Kuga has also been sold in the "ST-Line" and "Vignale" equipment variants.

Safety equipment

The Ford Kuga is equipped as standard with an anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution and an electronic stability program with traction control and "torque vectoring control" . It also has front and side airbags as well as head / shoulder airbags at the front and rear, as well as belt tensioners and belt force limiters at the front, safety pedals and Isofix child seat brackets on the two outer seats in the rear row of seats.

Engines

Right from the start, the Kuga had a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine in two output levels, with 110 kW (150 PS) or 134 kW (182 PS) and a 2.0-liter turbodiesel with 103 kW ( 140 PS) or 120 kW (163 PS) are available.

The smaller engines were only available with a manual six-speed gearbox, the more powerful gasoline engine with a six-speed automatic converter. The more powerful diesel engine was optionally available with the manual transmission of the smaller engines or with the Ford PowerShift automatic transmission. Vehicles with the two more powerful engines had all-wheel drive as standard, which was optional for the smaller diesel engine and not available at all for the basic petrol engine. These models were instead equipped with front-wheel drive.

In the United States , the Ford Escape is also offered with a 2.5 liter four-cylinder. All engines meet the Euro 5 emissions standard .

There have been new engines since October 2014: in the gasoline engines, a 1.5-liter EcoBoost with 110 kW (150 PS) or 134 kW (182 PS) replaces the equally powerful 1.6-liter unit, while the diesel engines in the output has been increased and an additional, weaker variant with 88 kW (120 PS) has been added. A 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine with 88 kW (120 PS) has also been available since June 2016.

A 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 178 kW (242 hp) has also been available in the facelift model since autumn 2017.

Registration numbers

Since the market launch up to and including December 2019, 308,336 Kuga have been newly registered in the Federal Republic. With the exception of 2013, when the model change took place in Europe, new registrations have risen steadily since the market launch.

Naming

The name Kuga was specially developed and, according to the manufacturer, should stand for robustness, be concise and easily memorable and suggest an athletic appearance.

From mid-1998 to summer 2002, Ford developed and marketed the Ford Cougar sports coupe commissioned by Mercury . The reason for the identical names between Cougar and Kuga in pronunciation is not known.

In Slovenian and in the Serbo-Croatian language area, Kuga means pest .
