The Ford Fusion was a passenger car model from the car manufacturer Ford . It was a minivan that was produced from autumn 2002 to mid-2012. The Fusion was only offered as a five-door and closed the gap between Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus .

Technically, it was based on the Fiesta '02, which was produced from the end of 2001 to summer 2008 . The Ford sedan with the name Fusion offered in the USA has nothing in common with the European model, despite the same name.

The first model generation of the Mazda 2 (2003-2007) was based on the Ford Fusion platform.

In November 2012, after ten years of construction, it was replaced by the Ford B-MAX .

design

The body of the Fusion was based on the refined New Edge design of the Fiesta '02, with the shape of the headlights similar to the Ford Transit and the smaller Ford Transit Connect . After new model generations in "Kinetic Design" were introduced in all other current Ford models from spring 2006, the look of the Fusion differed greatly from the rest of the model range.

Because of its higher seating position, it was easier to get into than conventional small cars and, with a sill-free luggage compartment of 337 liters, had an additional load space of 53 liters compared to the five-door Fiesta.

Equipment variants

The Fusion was initially offered in the trim levels Ambiente , Trend , Elegance and Fusion + . All Fusion models had power steering (electro-hydraulic in the 1.6-liter diesel engine), ABS , internally ventilated disc brakes at the front, drum brakes at the rear, four airbags, side impact protection, height-adjustable driver's seat as well as steering column, pollen filter, rev counter and a 40:60 divisible Rear seat and backrest.

  • Ambiente - basic model, not available in Switzerland
  • Trend - with central locking, electr. Front window regulator, electr. Adjustable and heated mirrors, leather steering wheel, foldable passenger seat back

Front window lifters, air conditioning, high-quality audio systems and seat covers, leather steering wheel and gear knob, door handles gear knob and center console with decor made of brushed chrome, from 2005: on-board computer, light u. Rain sensor. The Fusion Elegance has always been officially listed as the top model in the series.
  • Fusion + - in addition to the trend, has higher-quality seat covers, 16 "alloy wheels, on-board computer (depending on the market), air conditioning, radio with CD, folding exterior mirrors, aerodynamics package, rain sensor, gear knob in leather, aluminum decor, dark-tinted rear windows, protective strips in body color, heated seats (depending on the market). Only for this version there were real leather seats at an additional cost. In Austria and Switzerland this version was available under the name Plus . The Fusion Plus + had a special position as a lifestyle model (analogous to the Mondeo Titanium) within the pallet.

Special models for the German market:

  • Style - (basic ambience) with central locking, CD radio with remote control, air conditioning, folding front passenger seat back, protective strips in body color, gear knob in leather, seat covers like Trend
  • Calero - like Style , but also radio central locking, electr. Front window lifters, aluminum decor, leather steering wheel, fog lights, 15 "alloy wheels and a special exterior look in off-road design (underrun protection and aerodynamics package)
  • Black Magic - this edition model (basic style) offered a number of special features that were only available here: leather-Alcantara upholstery in black, 16-inch light-alloy wheels in black, LED lighting in the front footwell, loading sill protection in aluminum look

Special model for the Austrian market:

  • ecosport - based on the trend and additionally offered radio central locking, leather steering wheel, fog lights, radio with CD, air conditioning, protective strips in body color, and in the first few years also aluminum interior decor

A third headrest at the rear and head-shoulder airbags at the front and rear were available for all models at an additional cost. The ESP with ASR and brake assist was only available in conjunction with an on-board computer. However, ESP could not be ordered for vehicles with the 59 kW (80 PS) petrol engine, with Durashift EST or the automatic transmission.

Engine range

Three petrol and two diesel engines with outputs between 50 and 74 kW were offered, also in connection with a 4-speed fully automatic or an automated 5-speed manual transmission ( Durashift-EST , Electronic Shift Technology). With a consumption of 4.5 liters per 100 km and carbon dioxide emissions of 119 g / km, the 50 kW diesel version of the Fusion was one of the less polluting vehicles in spring 2007.

All engines achieved the Euro 4 emissions standard . The 1.4-liter diesel engine (50 kW) with ESP or with Durashift transmission (without ESP) initially only had the Euro 3 rating. Both diesel engines had no particle filters ex works , they did but could be retrofitted.

Facelift

In September 2005 the merger was subjected to a facelift . The dashboard (now padded), the seat covers and the equipment variants have also been changed from the outside by the yellow indicators in the headlights, other rear lights and wider side protection strips.

In early 2011, the range of engines was severely restricted. From then on, only two petrol engines with 1.4 and 1.6 liter displacement were available (59 and 74 kW, respectively), but they now met the Euro 5 emissions standard. Diesel engines were no longer available, which underscored the discontinued character of the model series. At the same time, the Fusion was delivered to some markets with chrome door handles on the outside and a chrome trim strip in the painted side moldings.

At the beginning of 2012, the higher-quality Fusion + version and the 1.6-liter gasoline engine were finally taken out of the range.

production

The Fusion was produced by Ford in Cologne-Niehl and exported from there to over 50 countries, including Angola , Australia , Hong Kong , Japan , New Zealand , Singapore and South Africa . The most distant destination was the Pacific island of Tahiti . The export quota of the Cologne plant was 83 percent, the largest foreign markets were Great Britain, Italy, France, Benelux and Russia.

The production of the Fusion ended in June 2012, the model is still very present in the cityscape of the city due to its use as an emergency vehicle for the Cologne public order office.

The successor to the Fusion was the Ford B-MAX presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2011, production of which began in the summer of 2012.
