The Fusion is the successor to the Ford Contour and is based on an extended floor pan from the Mazda6 . It is placed between the Ford Focus and Ford Taurus models within the model range . With the merger, the Mercury Milan and the Lincoln MKZ (formerly Zephyr) are largely identical .

The Fusion is available with two gasoline engines, a four-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 2.3 liters and a V6 engine with a displacement of 3 liters. All-wheel drive is optionally available for vehicles with a V6 engine.

Ford produced more than one million vehicles from mid-2005 to late 2011.

Facelift

In early 2009, the Ford Fusion underwent an extensive facelift and was offered on the US market from March 2009. It could now also be ordered with a hybrid drive.

The Mercury Milan , which is now also available with hybrid drive, like the Lincoln MKZ , have also been redesigned.

Fusion hybrid

The hybrid version of the Fusion has a 2.5 liter gasoline engine that works according to the Atkinson cycle . The electric motor is powered by a nickel-metal hydride accumulator , which can accelerate the vehicle up to a speed of 75 km / h without using the internal combustion engine.

The regenerative braking system can use more than 90 percent of the braking energy to charge the batteries. The average consumption of the Fusion Hybrid is 5.7 liters per 100 km.

Ford presented the new Fusion at the Detroit Motor Show 2012, and the market launch followed in the fall of the same year. The merger initially only produced in Mexican Ford plant Hermosillo , later in the Flat Rock Assembly Plant .

The Fusion is the first model to be built on Ford's new global CD platform . In Europe and Asia, the new generation of the Ford Mondeo , which has been available since autumn 2014 and is largely identical, is also based on this platform. With the exception of the hybrid version, the Mondeo is only available in Germany as a hatchback and station wagon version, while the Fusion is offered as a notchback.

The new model is only available in North America as a notchback sedan. Two EcoBoost engines are available as engine versions, as well as a full hybrid version and a plug-in hybrid version called Fusion Energi . Ford offers the Fusion on the North American market in three trim levels.

technology

The petrol engines of the EcoBoost generation use turbocharging and direct petrol injection to achieve a relatively high output with low petrol consumption, which is further reduced by an automatic start-stop system . The 2.0-liter gasoline engine has a 6-speed powershift - automatic transmission with double clutch technology and is also equipped with all-wheel drive available.

Assistance systems are a lane departure warning system, an adaptive cruise control system, a parking assistant and a blind spot assistant.

Hybrid variants

Both hybrid versions have lithium-ion batteries and should be able to drive purely electrically up to a speed of 100 km / h. A newly developed four-cylinder with a displacement of 2.0 liters, which also works according to the Atkinson cycle , serves as the combustion engine . It enables the same driving performance as the previous model generation, which was powered by a 2.5-liter engine, with significantly lower emissions and fuel consumption. This is the equivalent of 5.0 to 5.3 liters per 100 km.

Fusion Energi is a plug-in hybrid version that will be sold in the USA from 2013. The car can drive 32 kilometers purely electrically. The average consumption is 2.7 liters of petrol per 100 kilometers.

The hybrid models also have an active noise control. With the help of the audio system, acoustically disruptive influences from the tires are reduced in favor of the engine sound.

NASCAR

In 2006, the merger became the new silhouette of Ford vehicles in the NASCAR racing series and replaced the Ford Taurus used up until then. For the first time since the Ford Torino 1968, Ford introduced a new model in the NASCAR series at the same time as its US market launch. From 2013 the silhouette of the second model generation will be used, the Fusion made its debut on the Daytona 500 in February 2013. Since 2016, a revised vehicle has been used.
