Hermosillo [ eɾmoˈsiʎo ] is the capital of the Mexican state of Sonora and the Municipio Hermosillo and has 715,061 inhabitants (2010). The city's international airport is a hub for flights from the United States to northwestern Mexico. Hermosillo is also the seat of the Archdiocese of Hermosillo .
history
The origins of the city date back to 1700 when it was still called Villa de Pitic . The city only adopted its current name in 1828 in honor of the general and independence fighter José María González de Hermosillo . In 1881 a railway line from Hermosillo to Guaymas was opened and with growing trade and agriculture the population rose to 14,000 by the end of the 19th century.
During the Mexican Revolution , the city was the capital of Mexico and the seat of the cabinet of Venustiano Carranza for a few months .
In a major fire in a kindergarten in the city on June 5, 2009, a Friday, 43 small children were killed. In the following period the improvement of the fire protection regulations for such facilities was discussed in the Mexican public.

Since NAFTA was founded , Hermosillo has become a preferred investment location for American and Mexican companies. 114 companies have manufacturing facilities in the city, including Ford Motor Company .
