The Ford Flex is an American SUV with which the Ford group replaced the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey models, which were discontinued in the 2009 model year . Its styling is based on the Ford Fairlane Concept that was shown at the North American International Auto Show 2005. The 2009 model year Ford Flex was unveiled at the 2007 New York International Auto Show . Sales of the Flex began in the summer of 2008. The Flex is built on the same “flexible” production line as its sister model Lincoln MKT , the Edge and the Lincoln MKX at the Oakville, Ontario facility . The first production vehicle was delivered in early June 2008.

The Flex is a cross between a family van and an SUV . In 2006 Ford decided to discontinue production of the obsolete van models Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey, as sales and profit margins were declining compared to vehicles from Chrysler , Dodge and automakers in Asia. The Flex is a car-oriented crossover vehicle that is supposed to combine the possibilities of passenger transport of a van with the transport capacity and traction of an SUV.

Interior

The Ford Flex offers a choice of six or seven seats and has adjustable as well as removable footrests for the rear passengers. The second and third row of seats can be folded down variably so that the cargo space is flat. The car is the only one in its class to offer an optional small refrigerator in the center console of the second row of seats. A voice-controlled communication and entertainment system, called Ford Sync , combines the functions of mobile phones, satellite radio, CD, DVD and other media and the navigation system and was developed together with Microsoft . The interior of the car can be illuminated in seven different colors; there is also a multi-part sunroof similar to that of the Ford Edge .

The Flex continues the typical Ford design with three horizontal chrome bars in the radiator grille, which is already known from the Edge and the Taurus X. Window and roof pillars are clad in black plastic, and the roof is available in white, silver, or body color (a retro aspect to the otherwise modern car, similar to the Mini ). The Flex has LED taillights and a "capless" tank system, in which there is no longer a conventional tank cap, which provides a better seal, especially against outgassing. The standard wheels are 18 inches in diameter; 19 and 20 inch wheels are available on request.

As an option, there is a reversing camera above the rear bumper, which shows the area behind the vehicle on an 8-inch navigation screen as soon as reverse gear is engaged. The Flex has AdvanceTrac traction control with rollover control. Four-wheel drive is also available on request.

drive

The Flex's 3.5-liter V6 engine delivers 262 bhp (195 kW) of power and 336 Nm of torque. It is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. At a later date, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine with 365 bhp (272 kW) was introduced, which is only available with all-wheel drive. The trailer load is 2040 kg. The all-wheel drive can distribute 100% of the drive power to the front axle or rear axle as required.

The Flex has independent rear suspension (IRS). It is built on the same Ford D4 platform as the Taurus .

A flex of the pre-series was given to the Woodhouse Family of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition of the ABC series in the episode of January 13, 2008.
