The Ford Consul Capri was the 2-door coupé version of the Consul Classic that Ford of Britain from Dagenham ( England ) presented in 1961. In Great Britain the car was available between January 1962 and July 1964; Ford Cologne also offered the car without much success.

Like the Consul Classic sedan, the Consul Capri also offered equipment details such as double headlights, multi-stage windshield wipers, disc brakes , dimmable instrument lights and cigarette lighter. The car was referred to as "The First Personal car from Ford of Great Britain" in December 1961 advertising. The body was designed by Roy Brown , who also designed the Edsel vehicles . The name of the design was "Sunbird", a cross between Thunderbird and Sunliner . The vehicle had flowing lines, a large trunk and no continuous B-pillars. ( Hardtop Coupé ).

The 4-cylinder in-line engine with three crankshaft bearings and 1340 cm³ displacement (model 109E) was originally installed; however, these early specimens were viewed as underpowered and suffered from frequent crankshaft defects. From August 1962, the cars were delivered with the larger 1498 cc engine (model 116E), which was a decisive improvement. The first 200 Consul Capri were handcrafted, left-hand drive examples for export. At the IAA in Frankfurt (Main) in 1961, 88 units were sold in Germany, from 1961 to 1964 there were only 500 units. The earliest of these handcrafted specimens were shipped to Germany. The Consul Capri models 109/110 (with 1340cc engine) and 116/117 (with 1498cc engine) are one of the rarest Ford automobiles today.

In 1963 a GT version (also with the 116E engine, as in the Cortina GT ) was introduced. The whole car was very expensive to manufacture and at the end of production ran in parallel with the popular Cortina, but the sales figures were so disappointing (18,716 units, including 2002 GT versions) that the Consul Capri was removed from the model range after only 2 ½ years disappeared.
