successor Ford Fiesta '09

The Ford Fiesta '02 is the sixth generation of the Ford Fiesta . The vehicle was only available as a three- and five-door sedan and as a mini-truck with two seats and without rear side windows. The high-roof station wagon Courier has been discontinued and replaced by the new Ford Transit Connect on the platform of the first Ford Focus .

Model history

The sixth generation of Fiesta was based on a completely new platform, and compared to the previous models, it was significantly longer and wider. The Bild am Sonntag gave the Fiesta in 2002, the Golden Steering Wheel . All vehicles were equipped with belt tensioners , side impact protection , anti-lock braking systems (ABS), electronic brake force distribution and four airbags; Head and shoulder airbags are available at an additional cost.

Initially, this Fiesta was only available as a five-door in November 2001, the three-door version followed in June 2002. The vehicle was still available as a three-door van version without rear side windows, but the high-roof station wagon Courier was no longer available.

Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test Crash test star 4.svg

The smallest engine available was the Zetec-Rocam , known as Duratec , with a displacement of 1.3 liters, which replaced the outdated Endura-E engines with side camshafts . The Zetec 16V engines were now available as Duratec with 1.4 and 1.6 liter displacement, the version with 1.25 liter displacement was no longer available in Germany. The most powerful engine was the Duratec-HE with 2 liter displacement, which was used in the Focus , Mondeo and C-Max models , among others . Thanks to minor changes, the Duratec-ST developed 110 kW (150 PS) instead of 107 kW (145 PS). The Duratorq TDCi diesel engines with 1.4 and 1.6 liter cubic capacity were developed in cooperation with the PSA Group . For the two 1.4-liter engines (petrol and diesel), the automated five-speed manual transmission Durashift-EST was also available, which enabled automatic or manual shifting without using the clutch. The 1.6-liter gasoline engine could also be ordered with a four-speed fully automatic transmission instead of the five-speed manual transmission. An ESP with traction control (ASR) and brake assist was initially only available with certain engines and only ever without Durashift or automatic. The vehicles achieved the Euro 4 emissions standard , the 1.4-liter diesel engine only had the Euro 3 classification.

Facelift

A facelift took place in October 2005. Among other things, there were redesigned front and rear bumpers, different headlights and a high-quality interior with inlaid hard rubber parts in different colors, which could also be selected individually depending on the equipment and exterior color. In addition, four new metallic paint finishes (“Exotic Yellow”, “Manzana Green”, “Tango” and “Viola”) were on offer.

Other innovations were an AUX input for connecting an MP3 player , Bluetooth / voice control functions, automatic light and windshield wipers, on-board computers , automatic air conditioning and folding exterior mirrors, the available engine variants were not changed.

Equipment lines

  • Base
  • Ambience
The Fiesta Ambiente was the basic equipment after the facelift. Of standard specification ABS included with electronic brake force distribution (EBD), a tachometer, the IPS ( I ntelligent P rotection S ystem, Eng. For intelligent protection system with two front airbags, two side airbags and belt tensioners with belt force limiters), Rear headrests, a height-adjustable steering column, a asymmetrically divisible rear seat back and power steering. Externally, the ambience was set apart from the higher-quality equipment lines by the only partially painted bumpers. With the exception of Indianapolis blue, the vehicle was available in all exterior colors, the dashboard was in black / gray and the fabric covers for the seats were only available in the Obsidian design . The base price for the Fiesta Ambiente in 2007 was EUR 10,990. The Ambiente was only available in conjunction with engines in the lower performance classes; an automatic transmission was not offered.
  • Style
The “attractive evolutionary model” Style had a higher quality equipment than the Fiesta Ambiente and was also offered after the facelift. In addition to the standard features of the Ambiente , the Style included the audio system 5000C (cassette radio with four speakers), a height-adjustable driver's seat, air conditioning with recirculation, a leather steering wheel and bumpers, trim strips and door handles painted in the same color as the vehicle. The Fiesta Style could be ordered with all engine and transmission combinations available ex works (with the exception of the 2.0 liter engine of the Fiesta ST ). There were four patterns to choose from for the fabric covers, depending on which the dashboard was gray, red or blue, and there were also restrictions on the exterior color depending on the cover fabric. Some paintwork was not available for the style .
  • trend
In addition to the Ambiente equipment, the Fiesta Trend has electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, fog lights, seat covers and door panels in color to match the exterior paint, bumpers painted in the same color as the vehicle and central locking with remote control.
  • Ghia
After the facelift, the Fiesta Ghia offered the best equipment of the Fiesta models. The Ghia was more expensive than the Fiesta Style and was extensively equipped as standard with electrically heated, adjustable and folding exterior mirrors painted in the vehicle color, an on-board computer, electric front windows, radiator grille with chrome decor, leather gear knob, fog lights, windshield wipers with rain sensor, headlight assistant with daylight and night service, central locking with remote control and 15-inch steel wheels. An audio system was not provided ex works and could be ordered additionally at an additional cost. The seat covers of the Ghia were available both entirely in fabric and partially in leather in four different patterns. The dashboard was delivered exclusively in gray, the exterior colors were - as with the style - dependent on the fabric design, but with the exception of Indianapolis blue, all exterior colors were available. Apart from the 1.3-liter Duratec engine with 44 kW and the 2.0-liter engine, all engines were intended for the Ghia .
  • Fun
The Fiesta Fun was an edition model that was offered from 2005. The standard scope of delivery also included the 5000C audio system, height-adjustable driver's seat and air conditioning.
  • Connection
  • Sports
The Fiesta Sport offered the sporty appearance of the vehicles from the “Ford Fiesta ST Cup”. The standard scope of delivery included ABS with EBD , electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors painted in the vehicle color, a height-adjustable driver's seat, front electric windows, a leather steering wheel, an asymmetrically divisible rear seat backrest, fog lights, a sporty gearshift, a sports chassis, sports seats in front, bumpers in special design, central locking with remote control and 16-inch alloy wheels. The Fiesta Sport could optionally be equipped with the 1.4-liter engine with 59 kW (80 PS), the 1.6-liter engine with 74 kW (100 PS) or the 1.6-liter TDCi diesel engine with 66 kW (90 PS).
  • ST
Ford Fiesta ST (2005-2008)
The Fiesta ST was the top model of this series and was sold from January 2005. The ST stands for S port T echnology. In contrast to the touring car from the Fiesta ST Cup , whose 1.6 liter Zetec SE developed 118 kW (160 hp), the road version was equipped with the 2.0 liter Duratec HE , known as the Duratec ST 110 kW (150 PS). With a sportier gear ratio and a shorter shift travel, the ST reached a top speed of 208 km / h and accelerated from 0-100 km / h in 8.4 seconds. The shape of the touring car with modified bumpers, side skirts, a modified radiator grille and a larger air inlet in the front bumper was also adopted into the series, making the ST visually distinct from the other equipment. Outwardly, it remained unchanged even after the facelift - apart from the headlights and taillights - the radiator grille design of the ST was adopted for all other models in the facelift. In the interior there were four airbags, partial leather sports seats, leather steering wheel and leather gear knob, a CD radio, air conditioning, on-board computer as well as stainless steel pedal pads and door handles as standard. The interior was also revised as part of the facelift. Additional standard equipment included 16-inch light-alloy wheels, a sporty chassis, exterior mirrors painted in the vehicle color, door handles and side trim, a chrome-plated exhaust cover, fog lights, heat-insulating glass and aluminum door sills. After the facelift, the ESP , which had previously been available as an option, was also standard in Germany. The optional equipment included u. a. 17-inch alloy wheels, a roof spoiler, full leather interior, automatic air conditioning, alarm system, a better radio, heated seats and racing stripes on the hood, roof, tailgate and doors. The model was only available in certain colors, in Germany these were white, red, blue, royal gray and black. Depending on the exterior color, the upholstery varied between red and blue, the full leather interior was always completely black. The ST was the first Fiesta that was also equipped with disc brakes on the rear axle. The brake system on the front axle has been enlarged compared to the other models, and a more rigid torsion beam axle was used on the rear axle . There were some differences in equipment in other markets. In the United Kingdom, for example, the model was only available with 17-inch alloy wheels; the color royal gray was not intended for the ST there . Even after the facelift, ESP was not part of the standard equipment in all markets and had to be ordered there as an extra subject to a surcharge. The base price of the Fiesta ST in 2007 was EUR 18,600.
  • VAN (from 2007)
Ford Fiesta VAN (2007-2008)
From 2002, with the introduction of the new Transit Connect , the production of the small delivery vans Fiesta Courier and Escort Express was discontinued. The Transit Connect is a panel van built on the platform of the first Focus , and the interior design is somewhat similar to that of the Fiesta '02. A Fiesta VAN was only offered again in 2007, shortly before production of the Fiesta '02 was discontinued . This small delivery van can also be registered as a truck . Due to their limited utility, these vehicles are seldom found - especially in Germany.

The standard scope of delivery also included a rear spoiler painted in body color, 16 "alloy wheels painted in body color, air conditioning, exterior mirrors painted in body color, door handles and side trims, aluminum look decor in the interior and the 6000 CD audio system with four speakers Fiesta Sport only the 1.3-liter engine with 51 kW (70 hp) and the 1.4-liter engine with 59 kW (80 hp) were intended for the Fiesta Magic .

technology

body

The self-supporting body of the sixth series, as with all Fiesta models from sheet steel and was in addition to the proportions changed in some important details. A subframe is now used on the front axle to which the front wishbones as well as the engine and transmission are attached. The front mask is no longer permanently welded to the body, but simply screwed to the side members and the fenders. This design makes it easier to replace parts after an accident and to assemble the vehicle in the factory. The Fiesta '02 was also available as a three- and five-door model. The Courier high-roof delivery van is no longer required and is being replaced by the new Transit Connect . The body is a PVC - underbody protection , cavity protection in the doors and side skirts , bonnet protection and wax before protected corrosion .

landing gear

Front axle similar to that of the Fiesta '02

The basic concept of the chassis is the same as in the third series .

One-piece triangular wishbones with a stabilizer and coupling rods are installed on the front axle . The MacPherson struts common in this vehicle class are still used for the upper wheel guidance, suspension and damping . A new subframe is attached to the wishbone, stabilizer, engine and transmission. The rack and pinion steering with safety steering column is equipped with servo assistance as standard .

The torsion beam axle with spring-damper units , which is common in this vehicle class, is installed as the rear axle . The Fiesta ST was delivered with a stiffer rear axle.

In contrast to the previous models, the bodies of the sport models in this series, the Fiesta Sport and the Fiesta ST , are not lowered. However, other Eibach suspension springs were offered as accessories by Ford , which allowed the suspension to be lowered by 35 mm on the front and 30 mm on the rear axle. These springs were sold with ABE , so there was no need for a fee. The Fiesta ST had a stiffer rear axle and specially tuned shock absorbers ex works .

New in the Fiesta was a vehicle dynamics control (ESP), which was offered as optional or standard equipment depending on the equipment.

Braking system

All Fiesta '02 are equipped with a diagonally split two-circuit brake system and a pneumatic brake booster . Internally ventilated disc brakes with floating brake calipers are installed on the front axle . There are drum brakes on the rear axle, which the parking brake also acts on. The Fiesta ST was the first Fiesta to be delivered with disc brakes on the rear axle; the parking brake acts directly on the brake disc via the brake caliper. The anti-lock braking system is built into all models as standard.

drive

Duratec-HE in a Fiesta ST

All engines and transmissions of the Fiesta are installed transversely and drive the front wheels.

With the introduction of the Fiesta '02, the OHV engines, which had their origins in the Ford Anglia in the 1960s, were no longer offered and replaced by the Zetec Rocam engines with an overhead camshaft and two valves per cylinder developed by Ford Brazil . The Zetec S engines , which Ford already marketed as Duratec in this Fiesta , were taken over from the predecessor and offered with 1.4 and 1.6 liter displacement. The 1.25 liter engine was not offered in Germany and was only available as a re-import vehicle. The Duratec-HE , which was only built into the Fiesta ST, was also new . To this day it is the engine with the largest displacement ever offered ex works in a Fiesta, with an output of 110 kW (150 hp) this engine was only available in the Fiesta, in other models these engines had less power.

Also new are the Duratorq TDCi engines, which with 1.4 and 1.5 liters have significantly less displacement than the previous engines , but consume less fuel despite their higher output. In addition to a turbocharger, both engines are equipped with modern common rail injection , the 1.4-liter engine has two and the 1.5-liter engine has four valves per cylinder. These diesel engines are not developed in-house by Ford, but come from the development of Peugeot .

In the case of manual transmissions, mechanically operated five-speed transmissions are predominantly offered, and there is also an automated variant called Durashift-EST at Ford . The continuously variable transmission is no longer required; a four-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter is available as a replacement. While the clutch is operated hydraulically, as in the predecessor, the cable control is an innovation that was previously not available in the Fiesta. In the Fiesta ST , the shift travel has been shortened and the gear ratio has been adjusted accordingly.

Mixture preparation and ignition

As the old OHV engines are no longer used, there is no longer any central injection for the Fiesta's gasoline engines . In all variants, multi-point injection is used exclusively as an intake manifold injection . Since injection systems were state-of-the-art at that time, Ford decided not to point out the presence of an injection system. Appropriate plaques or lettering on infused engine parts is missing, on indications given in brochures and price lists on the Ford own EFI ( e lectronic f uel i njection) was omitted.

In gasoline engines, only static electronic ignition systems with two ignition coils ( wasted spark ) are used. The ignition and injection systems are only controlled by a control unit; additional systems such as the older EDIS are no longer used.

The diesel engines come from Peugeot and are equipped with a turbocharger and common rail injection .

Electrical system and lighting

Clear glass headlights from 2005

The electrical system of the Fiesta works with 12 volts. There are different three-phase alternators depending on the engine and equipment . The main headlights are equipped with H4 halogen lamps , the fog lamps with H1.

From the facelift in 2006, clear-glass headlights with a plastic headlight cover have been installed as standard. The appearance of the taillights has also been adapted accordingly; the covers do not take on the function of a lens here either .

Motorsport

Ford Fiesta ST Cup

Fiesta ST Cup vehicle from 2004

After the production of the technically almost identical Ford Puma was discontinued with the discontinuation of the previous model , this also meant the end of the Ford Puma Cup . The Fiesta ST Cup was held with the new model of the Fiesta as early as 2003 . The standard look of the Fiesta was supplemented by modified front and rear aprons, a different radiator grille and a roof spoiler. The engine used was the 1.6-liter Zetec SE with 170 hp , which had already been tested in the Ford Puma . The racing car later also formed the basis for the new Fiesta ST. The look was taken over into series production, a 2.0-liter Duratec with 150 hp was used as the engine .

Rallycross

The Fiesta '02 was converted into a rallycross vehicle by the Olsbergs company in Sweden . The longitudinally mounted 2.0-liter Duratec -Motor makes a Garrett - turbocharged 404 kW (550 hp), develops a torque of 820 Nm and drives all four wheels.
