Side Impact Protection System

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) (or side impact protection) is a safety concept developed by Volvo in the automotive industry .

The side impact protection system SIPS was introduced for the first time in 1991 in the Volvo 850 , Volvo 740 and the Volvo 900 series in the 1992 model year. It has been a standard feature of every new Volvo ever since.

The system consists of a reinforced B-pillar , reinforced side sills and additional struts in the vehicle roof and floor. In addition, energy-absorbing structures were built into the doors and the center console. Additional cross members made of high-strength steel were installed in the doors and cavities filled with honeycomb-like plastic blocks. Together with the reinforced seat consoles on the front seats, the impact energy in the event of a side impact is specifically directed into the vehicle structure in order to protect the occupants. The center console is specifically designed to be compressed to enable the front seats to be moved sideways and to minimize the forces acting on the occupant.

In 1994 the so-called SIPS-BAG was introduced for vehicles of model year 1995 . This is a mechanically triggered side airbag in both front seats that protects the seat occupant's rib area. The successor SIPS-BAG II was introduced in 1998 for the Volvo S70 and Volvo V70 of the 1999 model year. The airbag has been enlarged and now also protects the head of the front occupants.
In the newly developed Volvo S80 , instead of the SIPS-BAG II, the IC airbag was introduced in addition to the existing SIPS-BAG , so that the occupants of the back seat were now also protected by a head airbag. After the IC airbag has been triggered, it remains inflated for 3 seconds to protect the occupants even in the event of a vehicle rollover.
From 2005 the airbag construction was revised so that in some cases two separate SIPS- BAGs are used. This not only protects the chest but also the hips in the event of a side impact.
