The Ford Fiesta '89 is the third series of the Ford Fiesta , which was produced from February 1989. Since this generation, the small car has also been available with five doors, as a Courier high-roof station wagon and as a Calypso with a folding roof.

Model history

The Fiesta '89 (type GFJ) was completely redeveloped and the first Fiesta that was also available with five doors. The new model brought many technical innovations with it. Above all, the chassis has been improved with triangular wishbones at the front and a twist beam axle at the rear. Occupant protection was also taken into account with a more stable safety cell and side impact protection. Also had anti-lock brakes (ABS), airbags, air conditioning and a heated windscreen available. The new Zetec engines with 1.6 and 1.8 liters displacement were also available for the first time in this model . The new 1.8-liter diesel engine was also available with a turbocharger outside of Germany .

Facelift

In January 1994 a facelift was carried out on the Fiesta. Apart from detailed changes (externally the side mirrors and side indicators), mainly technical and safety-relevant components such as driver and front passenger airbags, side impact protection and belt tensioners were revised or offered in addition.

After production of the successor began in August 1995, the Fiesta '89 remained in the model range until August 1996 as the "Fiesta Classic". These vehicles came exclusively from the Spanish Ford plant in Almussafes near Valencia and were positioned as an inexpensive model below the Fiesta '96 until the introduction of the Ford Ka .

  • The Fiesta Futura was a sporty model of the Fiesta, which was only available with three doors and optionally with the 1.4-liter engine with 54 kW (73 hp) or the new 1.6-liter Zetec 16V engine with 65 kW (88 hp) was available. Outwardly, the Futura differed through a modified front bumper painted in the vehicle color with integrated fog lights and a roof spoiler. Wider tires in the dimension 185 / 55R14 were also part of the standard scope of delivery, such as power steering, a sports suspension, metallic paintwork, heat-insulating glazing, an asymmetrically divisible rear seat backrest, sports seats in the front (in the 1.6-liter variant in a higher-quality version), a rev counter and a leather sports steering wheel. The base price for the Futura in 1995 was 23,400 DM (approx. 12,000 EUR) with a 1.4-liter engine and 24,900 DM (approx. 12,700 EUR) with a 1.6-liter engine.
  • The Fiesta XR2i was a top model in Germany the direct successor of which appeared in the spring of 1984 Fiesta XR2 available and already in August 1989th The new model was completely spoiled again, but this time the plastic parts were painted in the body color. Four rectangular additional headlights (two fog lights and two high beam lights) were housed in the massive front bumper. The 1.6 liter CVH engine was equipped with an electronic multi-point injection system from Ford ( EFI = electronic fuel injection) and regulated catalytic converter and developed 76 kW (103 hp). In other markets, the vehicle was also available without a catalytic converter; the engine then developed 81 kW (110 hp). To distinguish this vehicle from the later variant with 16 valves, it is often referred to as the XR2i 8V .
  • The Fiesta S was a less noticeable sporty model. Initially, the vehicle was still equipped with a CVH engine with 1.4 liter displacement and developed 52 kW (71 hp) with or 54 kW (73 hp) without a regulated catalytic converter. With the introduction of the new Zetec engine , the Fiesta S received this engine with 1.8 liter displacement and 16 valves, which developed 77 kW (105 hp) and accelerated better than the XR2i at a similar top speed thanks to the higher torque and a shorter gear ratio. In the UK , the Fiesta S with the Zetec engine was marketed as the XR2i 16V . This vehicle replaced the XR2i with the CVH engine and was therefore also sold with bumpers and the extensions of the XR2i.
  • The Fiesta XR2i 16V was delivered in Germany with the most powerful series engine of this series. As in the Fiesta S, the Zetec engine had a displacement of 1.8 liters, thanks to different camshafts, a larger throttle valve and a different engine control unit, the vehicle developed 96 kW (130 hp). The interior of the XR2i 16V differed in small details such as the seats and the upholstery color from that of the first XR2i. Since the Fiesta S already occupied the place of the XR2i 16V in the United Kingdom, the vehicle with 96 kW was sold there as the RS1800 from 1992 . The RS1800 had a rear spoiler painted in body color, 14-inch aluminum wheels in a double-spoke design and Recaro seats as standard.
  • The Fiesta RS Turbo was offered in some European countries (mainly the United Kingdom, Benelux , Italy and France ) until May 1992 . This was equipped with the 1.6-liter turbo engine without a catalytic converter with 98 kW known from the Ford Escort . For the Fiesta the engine was equipped with the smaller T2 turbocharger from Garrett and an electronic injection system. The front bumper is slightly different from that of the XR2i , it has no grille to improve air flow and a cutout for the radiator fan. The vehicle has green instead of blue stripes and a speedometer display up to 240 km / h instead of 220 km / h. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland, however, the model was never offered because at that time catalytic converters were mandatory in new cars or this regulation was to be introduced soon.
Fiesta Courier
  • The Fiesta Courier was a high-roof delivery van and rounded off the range of small delivery vans for craft businesses and service providers. The vehicle was offered as a truck or as a passenger car with a rear bench seat.

The self-supporting body of the third series is still made of sheet steel , but has been newly developed for this model. This Fiesta was available as a three- and five-door model and as a Courier high-roof delivery van . As with almost all vehicles of that time, the bonnet opened towards the rear. In contrast to the previous series , the Fiesta '89 has additional side impact protection. The body is a PVC - underbody protection in the wheel wells , cavity protection in the doors and side skirts , bonnet protection outside of the front plate, on the side skirts, the wheel arch and the bottom of the doors and wax under the entire floor plate before protected corrosion .

Like the visible body parts, the floor pan and chassis of the Fiesta '89 have been completely redeveloped.

The triangular wishbones of the front axle are now one-piece, depending on the year of construction and engine type, a stabilizer is installed. The MacPherson struts common in this vehicle class are still used for the upper wheel guidance, suspension and damping . The rack and pinion steering with safety steering column is now on equipment and year, depending on a power assistance available.

Instead of a rigid axle with trailing arms and a Panhard rod , a torsion beam axle with spring struts is installed as the rear axle .

The Fiesta S , Fiesta XR2i (16V) and Fiesta RS Turbo models are lowered and equipped with a more sporty chassis.

Braking system

All Fiesta '89 are equipped with a diagonally split two-circuit brake system and a pneumatic brake booster . Disc brakes with floating brake calipers are installed on the front axle ; the discs are internally ventilated on the 16V , XR and RS models and vehicles with ABS. There are drum brakes on the rear axle, which the parking brake also acts on. An anti-lock braking system is available on request; in some equipment variants it is standard.

All engines and transmissions of the Fiesta are installed transversely and drive the front wheels. The "Valencia" engines of the predecessor with its side camshaft have been further developed, now called HCS ( h igh c ompression s wirl; highly compressed / swirled) and form, with 1.0; 1.1 and 1.3 liter displacement the most common engine versions of the new Fiesta. The 1.4 and 1.6 liter CVH engines are still available, and from 1992 the new Zetec 16V engines with 1.6 and 1.8 liter displacement will also be available . The 1.8 liter diesel engine has an overhead camshaft like the engine in the Fiesta '84 , but is otherwise completely new. In the early years, four-speed transmissions were occasionally offered for the smallest engines, but mostly the mechanically operated five-speed transmissions of type BC with a likewise mechanically operated clutch . A continuously variable transmission is also available for smaller engines on request .

Mixture preparation and ignition

With the introduction of the obligation for catalytic converters in new cars, the carburettors disappeared , so the Fiesta '89 was almost exclusively available with injection systems. In the first few years of production, some vehicles with carburettors and without catalytic converters were still sold in Germany, but some vehicles without catalytic converters, such as the Fiesta RS Turbo , were not available ex works in Germany. Besides single and twin carburettors of the manufacturer Weber , there were exclusively by Ford developed electronic fuel injection (EFI = e lectronic f uel i njection) type EEC-IV with controlled catalyst. The 1,1-; 1.3 and 1.4 liter engines have central injection, XR2i and 16V engines have multi-point injection. The Fiesta Diesel is equipped with a swirl chamber injection .

Some of the gasoline engines with carburettors are still equipped with a conventional distributor with contactless ignition . The other vehicles, especially the vehicles with gasoline injection systems and regulated catalytic converters, have static electronic ignition systems with two ignition coils ( wasted spark ), which, depending on the system, are either integrated directly into the injection system or work as an independent EDIS system.

Electrical system and lighting

The electrical system of the Fiesta works with 12 volts. Depending on the engine, there are different three-phase alternators with up to 70  amps . The main headlights are equipped with H4 halogen lamps , the optional round additional headlights with H1 bulbs, the additional headlights of the XR and RS models with H1 and H3.

Motorsport

The Ford Fiesta Mixed Cup was based on the Ladies Cup, which was carried out with the two previous models. In the mixed cup, a woman and a man formed a team that started together in the same vehicle. The acquisition costs for a race-ready XR2i were deliberately kept low, in particular to encourage youngsters in motorsport, which is why the maximum age was limited to 55 years. With up to 50 cars per run, the Mixed Cup was one of the best-filled racing series ever. As in the Ladies Cup, the races were usually held as part of the DTM races.

Studies

Two studies are worth mentioning: the four-door Fiesta Urba and the Fiesta Bebop, a pickup version.

The Urba was designed as a city car and was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1989. It had an electronic parking aid, an integrated garage door opener, a mini fridge and two doors on the passenger side and only one on the driver's side. This should prevent children sitting in the back seat from getting out of the car when parking on the side of the road. In addition, a striking yellow paintwork should ensure that the vehicle is better seen.

Wing car

The third series of the Ford Fiesta was the template for the wing car , which is on the roof of the Cologne City Museum .

This work of art by HA Schult was created in 1991 as part of the “Fetish Auto” campaign in Cologne . The former district president of Cologne, Franz-Josef Antwerpes, demanded the removal of the car, referring to the monument protection , but the responsible ministry tolerated a "temporary" stay of the object (which continues to this day).
