The Ford Fiesta '84 is the second series of the Ford Fiesta , which was produced from August 1983.

Model history

In August 1983, the second generation of the small car was presented. Although many parts of the predecessor were used in the Fiesta '84 , it is not considered a facelift - not least because of its own type designation. In addition to the interior, the front section of the Fiesta in particular has been redesigned to improve aerodynamics, but the new model has remained almost unchanged from the A-pillar.

Rear view

With the second generation of Fiesta models, the then new CVH engines were also available, which Ford had introduced in September 1980 with the third series of the Escort . In the Fiesta they were available with a displacement of 1.3 to 1.6 liters. Because of the wider engine compartment, it was possible to accommodate a five-speed gearbox and offer it as standard equipment for these engines and as an option for the 1.1 liter engine.

In February 1984 the three millionth Fiesta rolled off the assembly line, and the new Fiesta XR2 and Fiesta Diesel were also presented. With its 1.6-liter engine with 40 kW (54 hp), which was developed and produced by Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz , the diesel was the first low-emission car in this class.

In February 1986, the 1.3-liter CVH engine was replaced by a new 1.4-liter CVH engine with 52 to 55 kW (71 to 75 hp). This engine was available with a carburetor or from March 1987 with central injection and G-Kat .

Facelift

Ford Fiesta (1986-1989)

A subtle facelift was carried out during the company holidays in September 1986.

Externally, these models differ from the basic models in that the sheet metal bumpers with plastic corners are painted in the vehicle color. The most important changes concerned small things in the attachment parts. The XR2 experienced the greatest change in the interior and the engine.

From November 1986, the 1.1-liter engine with an uncontrolled catalytic converter and standard five-speed gearbox was available.

From May 1987 customers could order a continuously variable CTX automatic transmission for vehicles with the 1.1 liter engine .

Equipment lines

  • The basic model was the least equipped Fiesta. It was initially only available with the 1.0 liter engine. Like Fiesta L and Fiesta Fashion , the basic model only had the “small” dashboard. This has no glove compartment lid, a heating regulator attached to the side of the instrument panel and a narrower instrument cluster without an additional clock or rev counter. The basic model for the introduction of the Fiesta with 1.0 liter displacement cost 11,985 DM, or 14,345 DM as diesel, the L with 1.0 liter displacement cost 12,995 DM or 15,355 DM as diesel. The fashion was introduced after the facelift and cost from the beginning of 1988 with the 1.1-liter engine 14,115 DM; with the 1.4 liter engine 16,170 DM and with the 1.6 liter diesel engine 16,350 DM.
  • The Fiesta S was available with 1.1 or 1.3 liter displacement. The standard equipment included a five-speed gearbox, 155 / 70R13 tires, front bumper horns, additional halogen high-beam headlights and the higher-quality dashboard with closed glove compartment, three-stage fan, additional fresh air nozzles in the middle of the dashboard and a rev counter. When the Fiesta was introduced, the vehicle cost 13,285 DM with the 1.1-liter engine, the 1.3-liter engine cost 425 DM and was available from the beginning of 1984.
  • The Fiesta Festival was available after the model update in summer 1986 and replaced the Fiesta Fashion . Like the Fiesta S , the Festival was equipped with the higher-quality dashboard, but instead of a rev counter, it had an analog clock in the instrument cluster. From the beginning of 1988 the festival cost DM 15,180 with the 1.1-liter engine, DM 16,235 with the 1.4-liter engine or DM 17,235 as an injector with G-Kat and DM 17,415 as a 1.6-liter diesel.
  • The Fiesta Ghia was, as with the other Ford model series, the best equipped vehicle. In addition to the equipment of the festival , a. High-quality plastic bumpers with horns and chrome inserts, large side protection strips made of plastic, additional noise insulation, a rev counter, a digital clock with a stop function, swiveling sun visors with make-up mirror on the passenger side, a trunk lid remote release, an interval wiper function, a split-fold rear seat backrest, higher-quality door panels, chrome strips in the window rubbers and many other extras for standard equipment. While the Ghia still cost 14,517 DM with 1.0 liter displacement and 16,877 DM as diesel in August 1983, the vehicle beat in early 1988 with the 1.1-liter engine with 16,065 DM and with the 1.4-liter engine 17,700 DM to book.
  • The Fiesta Super was a sporty model below the XR2. In addition to the standard equipment of the festival , the Super offered a tachometer, wider tires in the dimension 165 / 65R13, an improved chassis with a stabilizer on the rear axle, the higher-quality bumpers of the Ghia with red trim, special wheel covers and a sports steering wheel. The list price of the Super at the beginning of 1988 was DM 16,065 with the 1.1-liter engine and DM 17,120 with the 1.4-liter engine.
Ford Fiesta XR2
  • The Fiesta XR2 was like its predecessor, the top model in the series. The Kent engine of the predecessor was replaced by the new 1.6-liter CVH engine with double carburetors and five-speed gearbox from the Escort XR3 and developed 71 kW (97 hp). The XR2 was completely spoiled and, in addition to extensive standard equipment similar to that of the Ghia, offered additional extras such as low-profile tires in the dimension 185 / 60R13, a revised and widened chassis, sports seats, an exclusive upholstery color, internally ventilated disc brakes and a black window frame. In contrast to the previous model, this XR2 was supplied with steel wheels in the dimensions 6 × 13 inches as standard, the light alloy wheels cost 800 DM extra. The new price of the vehicle without extras was 19,350 DM at the beginning of 1988.
As part of the model update in the summer of 1986, the Fiesta XR2 was also revised in some details. The color of the instrument panel and the heating control unit was changed from dark gray to black, and the interior from dark gray to light gray. The engine was equipped with a "lean-burn" cylinder head, the mixture preparation took over a 28/32 TLDM carburetor instead of the 32/34 DFT carburetor, the ESC-II ignition was replaced by a simple distributor with a vacuum unit. The heart-shaped combustion chambers of the cylinder head should ensure lower pollutant emissions and, in conjunction with the modified carburetor, lower consumption. The engine output remained almost the same at 70 kW (95 hp) despite the significantly smaller carburetor.
For certain markets such as Switzerland, the XR2 was delivered with a modified engine. The 1.6-liter engine developed 58 kW (79 hp) with a Ford VV carburetor. The equipment did not differ from the "normal" XR2, but the performance remained behind the standard version with an acceleration of 11.8 seconds (0-100 km / h) and a top speed of 166 km / h.
The XR2 wasn't available in all of the colors offered for the Fiesta. Diamond white, sun red (or Spanish red from 1986), glacier blue (or cosmos blue from 1986), strato silver, titanium gray (from 1986) and black were available. The extensions, the moldings and the border of the side windows were always the same regardless of the paint color.
Ford Fiesta Express
  • The small delivery van Fiesta Express was only available with the 1.0-liter engine and from 1986 only with the 1.1-liter engine. The equipment was based on the basic model . There was no back seat and no rear side windows. A flat loading area with a floor area of 1.12 m² was created through a special expansion. In August 1983 the vehicle cost 11,960 DM.

A radio was subject to a surcharge for all models. For the Sound 2002 with a loudspeaker, Ford asked for 460 DM (from August 1986 400 DM), the Sound 2004 was only available for Festival, Ghia and XR2 and cost 1,370 DM (from August 1986 850 DM) with four loudspeakers, digital station display and fader. . Other extras subject to a surcharge were a trailer coupling including TÜV approval (491 DM, from August 1986 600 DM), tinted windows (400 DM), metallic paintwork (450 DM) and a panoramic roof (650 DM). Parts of the standard equipment from the better equipment lines were usually not available individually for the cheaper models.

When buying the Fiesta, the "A-1 guarantee", which is still sold today, could also be taken out. In August 1983 Ford demanded 295 DM to 50,000 km total mileage and 480 DM to 100,000 km for the second and third year.

technology

Front-opening bonnet on a Fiesta XR2

body

The second series of the Ford Fiesta was offered as a three-door hatchback sedan and, with minor modifications, as a small delivery van. The self-supporting body is made of sheet steel . A special feature of the first two series of the Fiesta is the front-opening bonnet. This was primarily used to save space for the hood hinges on the cowl. In contrast to the next series, there is no additional side impact protection in the Fiesta '84. PVC - underbody protection in the wheel wells , cavity protection in the doors and sills , stone guard outside of the front plate, the side skirts , the wheel arch and the bottom of the doors and wax the entire floor panel delay the rusting of the body.

landing gear

Principle of the MacPherson axis

The front wheels are individually suspended from MacPherson struts and two-part wishbones ( wishbones with tension struts ). The rack and pinion steering is combined with a safety steering column , but power assistance was not available either as standard or as an option.

The rigid rear axle is guided by a pair of trailing arms , a Panhard rod and shock absorbers, which are mounted at two points on the axle tube to prevent it from twisting in the transverse direction. The coil springs sit directly on the axle tube, which is slightly cranked upwards.

The Fiesta S is firmer, the XR2 is lowered and has a specially tuned chassis. Some models have a stabilizer on the rear axle, which has been reinforced for the XR2 . The Panhard rod of the XR2 is made of solid round material, in the other variants it is a sheet steel profile.

Braking system

All Fiesta '84 are equipped with a diagonally split two-circuit brake system with a pneumatic brake booster . Disc brakes with floating brake calipers are installed on the front axle, the discs on the XR2 are internally ventilated. There are drum brakes on the rear axle, which the parking brake also acts on.

drive

All engines and transmissions of the Fiesta are installed transversely and drive the front wheels. In addition to the predecessor's Valencia engines with side camshafts , the new CVH engines and a 1.6-liter diesel from Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG with an overhead camshaft are also available. The four- and five-speed transmissions of type BC are mechanically operated manual transmissions with a likewise mechanically operated clutch . A continuously variable transmission with a push link belt was available on request from May 1987 , but only in conjunction with the 1.1 liter engine.

Mixture preparation and ignition

Ford ESC, Fiesta XR2

The Ford Fiesta '84 was almost exclusively available with carburettors . These were either single carburettor Weber and developed by Ford VV CV carburettor ( v ariable v enturi). Fiesta 1.4 and Fiesta XR2 are equipped with Weber register carburetors. The Fiesta Diesel has swirl chamber injection . The Fiesta 1.4i was the first Fiesta with a gasoline engine and a fuel injection system , while it was a CFI ( c entral f uel i njection) of Weber with an electronic control unit Ford, a centrally-injection electronically controlled system. The Fiesta 1.4i was also the first Fiesta with a regulated catalytic converter .

All gasoline engines are equipped with a conventional ignition distributor from Bosch or Lucas , which in the 1.0 and 1.1 liter Valencia engines still work with an interrupter contact. All CVH engines have contactless ignition systems , Fiesta 1.4 and Fiesta XR2 also have an external ignition controller . An "ESC" computer from Ford ("electronic spark control"), which is attached to the bulkhead, is responsible for calculating the ignition point.

The control unit of the Fiesta 1.4i, an EEC-IV system of Ford ( e lectronic s ngine c ontrol), almost processed a dozen different signals and controls the ignition timing , the injection amount, the throttle valve adjustment during deceleration, the idle speed and the speed limitation . The input signals come from the knock sensor , Hall sensor , throttle valve sensor, speed sensor , coolant temperature sensor , absolute pressure sensor in the intake manifold , intake air temperature sensor , the heated lambda probe and the idle switch. In addition, the output signals can be influenced via a self-test input, the octane number adjustment and the idle speed setting. Unlike later models, this engine, which was also used in the Escort '86 and the Orion '86 , has a mechanical ignition distributor with a Hall sender that supplies the dead center signal for the engine control unit.

Electrical system and lighting

The electrical system of the Fiesta has a nominal voltage of 12 volts. Depending on the engine, the three-phase alternator delivers 45 or 55  amperes . The main headlights are equipped with H4 halogen lamps , the optional round auxiliary headlights with type H1.

Motorsport

The Ford Fiesta Ladies Cup was continued after the production of the predecessor was stopped from 1984 with the new XR2 of the current Fiesta. The Ladies Cup was still a brand cup in which only women were allowed to participate. The races were usually held as part of the DTM races.

Conversions

There were many conversion kits for the Fiesta. The offer ranged from simple engine tuning with different camshafts to cylinder head machining , double carburetor systems, exhaust systems, increased displacement and turbo conversion for the 1.6 liter diesel engine. Wide-body kits made of GRP were also occasionally available; the best-known suppliers were Richter-Motorsport, Suhe, Wolf, Stoffler, Mohag and Schult.

The XR2 Injection was offered by Eichberg GmbH from Hasbergen-Gaste on the basis of the Fiesta XR2. Eichberg equipped the existing 1.6-liter CVH engine with the Bosch K-Jetronic injection system of the Escort XR3i or the Escort RS1600i and a sports exhaust system. The vehicle made 85 kW (115 hp) at 6000 min -1 and 144 Nm at 5250 min -1 . The new top speed was 195 km / h, the acceleration 0-100 km / h improved to 8.9 seconds. At that time, the costs with assembly were DM 5,250  (approx. EUR 2,700), which was a good 25 percent of the base price of the XR2. In addition, Eichberg offered a further increase in output to 94 kW (128 PS) through a revised cylinder head with a modified camshaft and an exchange for a shorter gearbox.

The company Turbotechnics from Northampton , England , offered a conversion kit for turbochargers from 1986 - also based on the XR2 . The conversion kit included a water-cooled Garrett T25 turbocharger, an air collector for the series carburetor, a modified vacuum adjustment, fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator, all the necessary pipes and lines including intercooler. With these changes, the engine developed 93 kW (127 hp) at 5500 min −1 and 183 Nm at 3800 min −1 . The driving performance also improved significantly, 7.9 seconds were specified for the acceleration from 0-60 mph, the top speed was 196 km / h. This conversion kit was offered for the British market and without a TÜV certificate. Ford was so convinced of the quality of the conversion that vehicles that were converted in certain workshops continued to receive the full factory warranty.

Some companies also offered convertible conversions based on the Fiesta, the best known was that of the Bieber company from Borken .

Studies

As with the first series, Ghia also published a study of this model. In Urby it was a spacious vehicle in which the front, rear, and especially the roofline were changed.

Others

Based on the second generation of models , the British company Quantum Sports Cars built the Quantum model , which was available both as an MK1 Coupé and as a 2 + 2 Convertible (2 + 2-seater Cabriolet). The technology and the interior were taken over from Ford almost unchanged, the new body parts for the front and rear were made of GRP . After 215 copies, the production of the coupé was stopped, 431 of the convertible have been built to date. A special feature of these vehicles is the so-called clamshell hood , in which the engine hood including the front and fenders can be opened to the front.
