The map ignition adjusts the ignition point based on the following control variables :

To always determine the optimum ignition timing, the electronic engine control accesses determined by the manufacturer maps back. The maps are stored digitally on the ROM , EPROM or in modern ignition systems on an EEPROM . The manufacturer optimizes the ignition map for performance, consumption and exhaust emissions (spec. NO x ). In addition to the 2-dimensional main map (parameters: speed and load), there can optionally also be auxiliary fields (e.g. for engine emergency operation).

With chip tuning , these maps are usually changed in such a way that the ignition point is earlier, which means that a higher total pressure is exerted on the piston.
