Niehl ( kölsch : Nehl ) is a northern district of Cologne on the left bank of the Rhine .

location

Niehl borders the Rhine in the east, Riehl and Nippes in the south, Weidenpesch and Longerich in the west and Fühlingen and Merkenich in the north .

history

The old town center of Niehl is located at the point where the Roman road from Cologne to Neuss - today's Niehler Straße - meets the banks of the Rhine. Niehl was first mentioned in 927. Since the 11th century, the Kunibertstift in Cologne had parish sovereignty over the place. Politically, the former farming and fishing village of Niehl belonged to the county or to the office of Hülchrath in the Electorate of Cologne . In 1794 Niehl was occupied by French revolutionary troops and the place became part of the Mairie Longerich in the canton of Weiden in the arrondissement of Cologne in the Département de la Roer . In 1815 Niehl came to the Kingdom of Prussia and to the mayor of Longerich in the Cologne district . It was incorporated into Cologne on April 1, 1888.

Up until the 20th century Niehl was a fishing village , then a few large companies started to settle north of the village. These included, above all, the Ford factories in Germany that were founded here on October 28, 1929 and relocated from Berlin . An industrial park takes care of the supply of spare parts for automobile production.

The industrial settlements in the north of the district corresponded to increasing residential developments in the south and west. In these two directions, Niehl has merged seamlessly with the neighboring districts of Riehl, Nippes and Weidenpesch.

Demographic statistics

Structure of the population of Cologne-Niehl:

  • Share of under 18s: 17.0% (2014)
  • Proportion of over 64-year-olds: 18.2% (2014)
  • Proportion of foreigners: 23.2% (2015)
  • Unemployment rate: 8.9% (2014)

Economy and Infrastructure

Industry

In addition to production, the Ford plants also house the German headquarters and, since 1998, that of Ford of Europe . In addition, the district is home to the largest of Cologne's Rhine ports , petrochemical plants , a waste incineration plant , the Niehl thermal power station , which uses natural gas as fuel, and the M. DuMont Schauberg publishing house . The district is the most important industrial and commercial center of the city of Cologne.

market

On Thursdays there is a weekly market in the parking lot on Waldfriedstrasse .

traffic

The port and the industrial site are connected to the railway network by the ports and goods traffic of Cologne (HGK). This is where the Cologne North Terminal, used for combined transport (KLV), is located .

The Cologne light rail network connects the district from two sides: in the south by line 16 on Amsterdamer Straße and on the southern district boundary also by line 13 on the Gürtel- Hochbahn and in the north by the route from Weidenpesch along the Ford works to Merkenich (Line 12). A long-desired extension of the southern route to the northern one is currently failing due to Cologne's poor financial situation.

Niehl is connected to the A 1 junction 100 Köln-Niehl by a four- to six-lane feeder road. The four-lane arterial roads Boltensternstrasse and Amsterdamer Strasse lead into the city center . In the south of the district there is the possibility of crossing the Mülheimer Brücke to get to the right bank of the Rhine.

religion

The Catholic churches of St. Katharina on Sebastianstraße, Alt St. Katharina (the "Niehler Dömchen") on the corner of Sebastianstraße / Niehler Damm and St.Clemens on Friedrich-Karl-Straße belong to the pastoral care area of Mauenheim / Niehl / Weidenpesch in the Deanery of Cologne -Nippes.

The former Catholic Church of St. Christophorus is leased to the Armenian Church ; The Armenian Bishop Karekin Bekdjian for Germany also resides here .

The Protestant Petrikirche is located on Schlenderhaner Straße.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat has been operating the Bait un-Nasir since 1985 in a converted commercial building in Eichhornstrasse, an Islamic community center.

schools

Community elementary schools are located in Halfengasse and Nesselrodestrasse. The Erich-Kästner-Gymnasium (formerly simply called Gymnasium Niehl) in Castroper Strasse is one of the secondary schools in Cologne.

Future technology in residential construction

A new housing estate was built in Cologne-Niehl by 2009 (50 m from the intersection of Amsterdamer Strasse / Friedrich-Karl-Strasse on the former site of the Siemens company ) in which the 383 residential units (single-family houses as well as rental and owner-occupied apartments) for about 1000 people are supplied almost exclusively with geothermal energy . At the time, it was the largest geothermal housing project in Germany. On the former industrial site, holes up to 100 meters deep were drilled for the geothermal probes that feed the heat pump heating .

The Fordsiedlung, which is in dire need of renovation, lies along Königsberger Strasse, bounded by Amsterdamer Strasse and Nesselrodestrasse. The three-story rows of houses were built in the 1950s for workers from the Ford factory. Today they are owned by the State Development Corporation of North Rhine-Westphalia . The settlement is being extensively renovated and converted into a solar settlement .

Carnival and customs

The Cologne Carnival , the “fifth season”, is also celebrated in Niehl. Important highlights of the session are the proclamation of the Niehler Tollities , the opening of the street carnival in Alt- Niehl and the Sunday train. Mainly responsible for the organization is the interest group Niehler Karneval eV , which is also involved in various social areas beyond the carnival.

Particularly worth seeing is the Alt St. Katharina church , consecrated in 1260 , whose Romanesque west tower, which probably dates from the 12th century, is the oldest building in Niehl. The small village church, also called “Niehler Dömchen”, is therefore looked after by the Friends of Roman Churches in Cologne . First mentioned in the "Capella" is in a document of 1236 the congregation of St. Kunibert to which they were subject to duty. The originally three-aisled basilica was rebuilt several times - with the exception of the tower, for example the south aisle was demolished in the 13th century in favor of a larger Gothic central nave with a choir , which was then vaulted in the 14th century. The north aisle was rebuilt in 1894 on the old foundations. - The flood-prone location on the Rhine made it necessary to build an ice breaker with a wall on the church in 1747. It was crowned and protected by a statue of John of Nepomuk with this very year. The church is still in use and can therefore only be visited before the services and by appointment.

The neo-Romanesque church of St. Katharina , the construction of which was necessary from 1892–1894 due to the growth of the community, was built according to plans by Theodor Kremer with a west tower, three- nave nave , transept and semicircular apse . Parts of the furnishings such as the octagonal font from the 14th century were taken over from the old church. It was badly damaged in the Second World War and gradually rebuilt after 1947 with the first building security according to plans by Rudolf Schwarz . Above all, the interior was designed according to newer ideas.

Niehl owns three old school houses from the Prussian era, which are located in Halfengasse and Merkenicher Straße.
