Solar settlement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A solar settlement (also known as a solar village or solar settlement / village ) is a settlement whose construction or renovation / modernization is based on the use of solar energy for energy supply in the urban planning concept (in Germany usually officially in the form of a development plan ).

Usually this is done in addition to the use of solar energy in the form of

also compliance with high energy standards for the buildings through a particularly energy-saving construction (insulation, ventilation technology, optimal alignment / south orientation of the building, avoidance of shading or solar radiation losses) and an energy-saving transport concept ( car sharing , connection to public transport , electric cars, etc.) based on.

It is also customary that combinations of solar energy with other regenerative forms of energy such as geothermal energy ( heat pump heating etc.) or bioenergy ( wood heating etc.) are permitted in the concept, although the eponymous solar energy should be in the foreground.

Sample projects

  • One of the first projects in Germany (started in 1972, completed in 1980) was the Penzberg solar village in Penzberg in Bavaria.
  • Probably the best-known solar settlement in Germany is the solar settlement on Schlierberg in Freiburg-Vauban , built from 1998.
  • From 1997, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia took on a pioneering role in setting up solar settlements in Germany with the funding program for 50 solar settlements in North Rhine-Westphalia .
  • From 1999, the solarCity Linz was established in Linz, Austria .
  • The Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck solar settlement was the first solar settlement in the Ruhr area. At the end of 1999 the first residents moved into their houses and since the final completion at the end of 2001, a total of around 72 families have lived in the Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck solar housing estate. To date, the settlement covers over 40 percent of its own electricity needs with solar energy.
