The Roman Catholic parish church Neu St. Katharina is a listed church building in Cologne-Niehl , a district of Cologne ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The community belongs to the Archdiocese of Cologne.

History and architecture

The place was documented in 927 by the archbishop Wichfried , a capella was mentioned in 1236 in a document of the provost Buno. The St. Kunibert Abbey had been authorized to collect taxes from Niehl since 1080. The old Katharina Church became too small over the centuries. Due to industrialization and the incorporation into Cologne in 1888, the population had increased steadily; a new building was necessary. On May 1, 1892, a collection was advertised in the Kirchlicher Anzeiger, it was to be collected in all churches of the diocese for the new building; the collection brought in 24,000 marks and provided the basis for the financing. The foundation stone was laid on October 2, 1892, the consecration was carried out on June 5, 1894 by Auxiliary Bishop Hermann Josef Schmitz.

The neo-Romanesque basilica was built in brick from 1892 to 1894 under the direction of Theodor Kremer . The building has a transept and a semicircular apse. A group of three towers stands on the west side. The copper-clad sheets of the roof cladding were replaced by a new slate cladding for the ship and tower at the end of the 1950s. In 1960, the building councilor Reusteck was commissioned with the final repair of the war damage. The church tower was crowned with a weathercock in 1961, and three new confessionals were purchased shortly thereafter. The side doors, the handles of which were made by the goldsmith Dreher, were clad with copper plates in 1962. The interior was painted in 1964. The interior was modified according to the requirements of the Second Vatican Council for the liturgy. Rudolf Schwarz designed the plans with the assistance of the architect Hermann Pfeifer. The main altar was placed in the crossing and the organ with two prospects, on both sides of the apse. The artistic design for the altar table and the steps was done by Anton Wendling, the tabernacle and the cross were created by Hein Wimmer.

Furnishing

  • In March 2013, the Benedictine monk P. Abraham Fischer from the Königsmünster Abbey created a wrought-iron Way of the Cross in a modern, contemporary design.
  • The first high altar was made by sculptor Edmund Mengelberg from Cologne. Three oak altar steps led up to the sandstone cafeteria. The altar plate was made of polished granite and the three-way front of polished marble. Christ's monogram was engraved in the middle field. To the right and left of the tabernacle were two groups of figures carved from linden wood with the birth and proclamation of Christ. In the reredos above were the half-length portraits of Saints Sebastian, Anthony of Padua, Christina and Catherine. The forged iron doors of the tabernacle were covered with a graphed and polished brass plate. The entire woodwork of the altar was painted polychrome.
  • The sculptor Most erected the Joseph altar in 1894.
  • Today's tabernacle stands on a pedestal between the cross and the altar, it was made of silver and is decorated on the sides with enamel work depicting the lamb, the fish and the dove.
  • The Marien Altar was built in 1897 by the sculptor Nabbe.
  • The pulpit, delivered in 1906 by the sculptor Eduard Schmitz's company, including the sound cover, was attached to the first granite column. It was equipped with the standing figures of the four evangelists and decorated with two relief panels showing the scene of the power of the keys and the twelve-year-old Jesus in the temple .
  • The current altar was built in 1949 by A. Wendling. The tabernacle on it is a work by H. Wimmer. On the sides there are the four evangelist symbols and on the altar steps 24 crowns, as symbols for the 24 elders of Revelation.
  • The eight-seat choir stalls were built in the 16th century.
  • The wooden Madonna was carved in the 16th century.
  • The octagonal font from the 14th century comes from Alt St. Katharina
  • The carved figure of St. Sebastian from the 17th century, like the baptismal font, comes from Alt St. Katharina.
  • In September 1958, Hein Wimmer made a bronze cross and two altar candlesticks. The cross hanging over the altar shows Christ as the victor.
