The Friends of Roman Churches Cologne, founded in 1981 . V. supports financially and ideally the preservation, further development and scientific research of the Romanesque church buildings in Cologne . He also intends to use guided tours, lectures and public relations work to strengthen understanding and commitment to these church buildings in hilltop Cologne.

Co-founder and chairman until 2002 was the then district president Günter Heidecke . In 2012 a foundation was established by the sponsoring association ( Foundation Romanesque Churches Cologne ), which is supposed to ensure the work on a permanent basis. Because of the unique selling point, the Friends' Association has been aiming to have Cologne's Romanesque churches included on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2013 . An application had already been considered in 1980 by the city curator at the time, Hiltrud Kier .

The 12 large Romanesque churches

After the majority of the often considerable war damage, which the former Cologne city curator Ulrich Krings put in his book in 2007 at 480 million euros, was repaired on the churches in the 1970s and a substantial part of the identity of the cityscape was restored (near St. Kunibert , the association participated in the reconstruction of the west building until 1985), the interest and commitment of the traditional patronage citizens and companies in Cologne was able to focus on the preservation and valorization of the churches.

For the foundation, the wreath of the twelve large churches in the old town was first included in the funding program. These are:

In 1950, Rudolf Schwarz had already addressed the semicircle of Cologne's Romanesque churches as the “Via Sacra” in his book Das Neue Köln . Only half a century later this idea was taken up by the Bochum professor of architectural history, Wolfgang Pehnt . The former Cologne city curator and promoter of the Romanesque Churches in Cologne, Hiltrud Kier , wrote one of her books about the Via Sacra in 2003.

The 13 small Romanesque churches

The circle of churches to be funded could later be expanded to include the small, former Romanesque village churches outside the medieval city wall , which today have long been part of the Cologne city area:

The 4 former Romanesque parish churches

In 2005, four smaller former parish churches in Cologne's old town were included in the funding program. Two of these churches are only partially preserved and integrated into newer buildings:

Also included:

Was not included Old St. Pancras (Cologne-Worringen) .

Board

The chairman of the association is Helmut Haumann . Many well-known Cologne residents from politics, business, culture, media and church are represented on the board of the association. The honorary chairpersons are the Archbishop of Cologne, Rainer Maria Cardinal Woelki, and the Lord Mayoress Henriette Reker .

Special activities

Since 1988 the association has been promoting the Romanesque Summer in Cologne's Romanesque churches with other cultural institutions , during which musical performances are performed for a week. The week closes with the Romanesque Night in St. Maria im Kapitol as the highlight.
