history

The first signs of human existence were found in the Younger Stone Age . This is one of the remains of the Rössen culture (around the 3rd century BC). A small bowl was discovered in a brickworks pit (former owner Offermann, probably today's Ziegeleiweg) that is decorated with horizontal rows of wide grooves. On the other hand, mixed with remains of the Michelsberg culture , because the site contained ceramic pieces.

The first permanent traces of settlement from the late Latène period (190 BC to the birth of Christ) were examined at the same site in 1938. These are three sites in an area of 1100 m² at a depth of 0.4–0.7 m in the floodplain that had house floor plans in the form of post holes, stone packings and shards from this era. Roman ceramic parts indicate that the settlement existed until the 2nd century AD.

In Westhoven, white-yellow fragments of a relief urn from the Carolingian era were found .

Westhoven is mentioned for the first time in 922 in a forged document for the monastery of the Holy Virgin, today's St. Ursula . 1003 was Deutz Abbey Archbishop Heribert of Cologne with the tenth feature of the goods Westhoven. In 1041 the abbey was awarded the court of Westhoven by Archbishop Hermann II . The Nikolaus chapel was built here in 1100 .

Later in the Middle Ages, the place belonged to the office of Porz in the Duchy of Berg . During the floods of February 1784 , the village was flooded by the Rhine. Due to the military events in the French Revolutionary Wars , Westhoven was burned down except for the Nikolauskapelle and the 180 residents had to flee. With the establishment of the Grand Duchy of Berg (1806) and the reorganization of the administration based on the French model (1808), Westhoven came to the Rhine department . Since 1815 Westhoven belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia , since 1929 to the Porz office and since 1932 to the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis.

After the floods of January 16, 1920, a dike system was planned for the inhabited parts and arable land. Until the end of July 1926, only the protection of the inhabited area was implemented by a flood protection wall extending from the southern end of Rheinaustraße to St.Agatha-Straße.

In 1936 a pioneer barracks, the “ Mudra barracks ”, was built in Westhoven . This was very badly damaged in air raids in 1944, but served as an emergency shelter for bombed out and refugees until 1949. From 1951 to 1965, Belgian troops took over the barracks until it was handed over to the Bundeswehr in 1974.

Between 1973 and 1975, the Gerling Group built a residential park with up to 16 floors with 573 apartments. Westhoven has been part of the city of Cologne since 1975. The Belgian military left the Adjt barracks in 1995. Brasseur . From 2011 this area will be converted into a water protection zone and a commercial area.

Business

During the First World War, the Mannesmann-Mulag-Werke settled in Westhoven , where they constructed cars and the giant bollard , an unfinished first German transocean aircraft. In 1927 the factory halls were taken over by the Canadian company Massey-Harris , in order to produce agricultural machinery there from 1929 with 600 employees until at least 1954. After the Second World War, 150 employees began again in the almost completely destroyed factory with the production of agricultural machinery , spare parts and precision roller chains, which they delivered all over the world. In particular, self-propelled combine harvesters with a front cutting unit were delivered for the first time in Germany . At the same time, the Stollwerck company relocated its headquarters from the southern part of Cologne to Industriestrasse in Westhoven. In 1984 the company applied to rename this street to Stollwerckstraße . Only after several negative notices and the cancellation of the Stollwerckplatz elsewhere in Cologne was the requested renaming in 1993.

Until mid-2013, the administrative headquarters for Citroën Germany and the central workshop were located on André-Citroën-Strasse . The company premises are being converted into a residential area with subsidized living space, care and social facilities and student accommodation.

In addition, the administrative headquarters of Stollwerck and the cathedral brewery (partly in Ensen ) on Charlottenstrasse can be found in the northern industrial park on Stollwerkstrasse .

The entrance to the new building of the penal institution

On the site of the former Belgian Passendale barracks one built according to the latest therapeutic and safety standards for the clinic was the fall of 2009 for 150 patients forensic put into operation. This new hospital building caused a lot of unrest in the population in advance. In Cologne, the citizens' initiative Bürger-KaFOR Köln , critics and opponents of the Forensic Clinic Köln-P-Westhoven, collected over 35,000 signatures against the clinic at this location. As a result, the initiative and the Ensen-Westhoven citizens' association were appointed to the planning advisory board and then to the clinic advisory board, where both contribute both critically and constructively. The proposed relocation 2 km away or in the Wahner Heide failed. The forensic clinic is operated by the Rhineland Regional Council.

Located on the Porzer Ringstrasse, the Westhoven waterworks, built between 1903 and 1904 in a listed Art Nouveau building, pumps drinking water for the surrounding area. Initially the supply area was the municipality of Porz, today it is northern parts of the city, as Porz is served by the Zündorf and Leidenhausen waterworks. The raw water from the deep wells is mixed with 10% bank filtrate from the Rhine. The conveying capacity increased from initially 600 m³ / hour to 1990 to 3500 m³ / hour. Today's operator is RheinEnergie .

Westhovener Aue

Lake in the Westhovener Aue

The approximately 70 hectare area of the Westhovener Aue was designated as a floodplain by the Cologne City Council in 2005. This outdoor area of the former Brasseur barracks was historically and after the Second World War used as a military training area. It is forbidden to enter off-road due to possible remains of ordnance . 52,000 m³ of enclosed space (barracks building) and around 13,000 m² of traffic area have been demolished and unsealed. The city planted over 2000 woods typical of the floodplain and had larger meadows laid out. In the Westhovener Aue, compensation measures were carried out for a large number of structural flood protection interventions that could not be compensated on site. Part of the area has been open to the public for several years.
