Zündorf is a district of Cologne in the Porz district in the south of the city on the right bank of the Rhine.

Location and surroundings

Zündorf is located in the south of Cologne, directly on the Rhine . To the east, the district of Zündorf borders on Elsdorf and Wahn , in the south-east on Libur , in the south on Niederkassel-Ranzel , in the south-west on Langel and in the west on the Rhine. The Cologne districts of Weiß and Sürth are located on the opposite, western side of the Rhine .

Today's Zündorf originally consisted of two districts, Niederündorf and Oberündorf, with Oberündorf initially being the more important. In particular, the Cologne stacking law (1259) gave the port in an old arm of the Rhine in Niederündorf a special significance for centuries and Niederündorf flourished, with businesses and trading houses settling in the streets leading to the market square at the port.

The market square was fundamentally rebuilt in 1972 as part of the redesign of the Groov and raised towards the Rhine. As part of the flood protection concept of the city of Cologne, foundations for a mobile flood protection wall were later set and most recently in 2006 u. a. a further increase of 30 to 90 cm was made so that the surrounding buildings are protected up to a flood of 10.70 m Cologne level.

Groov

The groov in spring

The Groov recreation area is located on the banks of the Rhine in Zündorf. A former arm of the Rhine, previously separated from the Rhine by an island, called Mittelwerth or Groov . It was always threatened with silting up - especially after it was less used from 1831 onwards due to the abolition of the Cologne stacking law . In 1849 the island was connected to the bank upstream by a dam. In 1862 the "island" was extended by the creation of groynes on the Rhine side, which led to an island widening. The lower arm of the Rhine could still be approached by ships with a shallow draft until the middle of the 20th century - in the end only during floods.

The arm of the Rhine is now divided into two lakes, which are connected by two canal pipes. After a direct fresh water supply was no longer available, the lake threatened to tip over. To prevent this, oxygen is fed into the water of the lower lake via a floating fountain in summer. The upper part of the lake is temporarily supplied with fresh well water. There is also a rental station for rowing boats and pedal boats. A marina was built at the northern end of the Groov, which is used in particular by the adjacent water sports clubs.

The KroKoLino ferry runs from Zündorf across the Rhine to the Weiss district opposite. In summer, when the weather is good, there is a lot of traffic there from many excursionists. The varied outdoor catering at the Groov also benefits from this. The term Groov has been used as a recreational area for this entire area up to the bank since the redesign of the island, the harbor and the adjacent properties.

history

Finds, especially at the church of St. Michael in Niederündorf, prove the Roman presence within the right bank of the Rhine on the border of the Imperium Romanum . There was a kind of free zone here, because the Rhine on the right bank of the Rhine was under military observation and control by the Romans. From the old parish church of St. Martinus von Niederündorf there is also a Carolingian barrier fragment and tombstones from the 10th to 12th centuries. In 1008, Archbishop Heribert of Cologne transferred properties in Zündorf to the Deutz Abbey he had founded . In 1155 two pastors are already mentioned in Udendorp, so that two places of worship and a correspondingly important settlement can be assumed.

Until 1806, Zündorf belonged to the Duchy of Berg , according to the Bergisch office division, the former place was already administered by the Porz office. In 1795 the Porz office with the Zündorf district was occupied by French troops. In the following years, the place belonged to Mairie Wahn in the canton of Mülheim in the arrondissement of Mülheim in the Rhin department in the Grand Duchy of Berg. Porz came to the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815 and became part of the Heumar mayor. In 1875 the official seat of Heumar was moved to Porz. In 1910 a town hall was built in Porz for the Heumar mayor. In 1928 it was renamed Amt Porz and merged with Amt Wahn in 1929. From 1932 the Porz office belonged to the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis. In September 1951, the municipality of Porz received city rights. On January 1, 1975, the city of Porz and the other districts of Porz, u. a. Zündorf, incorporated by the city of Cologne.

The Zündorf defense tower

In 1259 the city of Cologne was granted the stacking right, which the merchants tried to circumvent; As a result, Zündorf became a port and trading center for goods traffic with the Duchy of Berg. The arm of the Rhine between the Groov, an old Rhine island and the banks of the Rhine served as the port. The goods shipped on the Rhine were loaded onto wagons in Zündorf and transported overland around the city of Cologne to beyond Mülheim am Rhein . However, this was not without risk. If it was proven that he wanted to circumvent the stacking right by land, his goods could be expropriated. The village of Zündorf served as a loading station upstream, which enabled it to prosper.

Not only the people of Cologne were dependent on customs duties or customs revenue, but also the Duke von Berg. Since the 15th century he raised the Rhine toll in Zündorf as a receipt. The customs tower may still be a reminder of this today , the Zündorf fortified tower was a residential tower in earlier times , and it probably dates from the second half of the 13th century. After a fire, it was rebuilt as a storage room in 1864 and converted from 1975–1980 according to plans by Gottfried Böhm . The tower is used by the Heimatverein, which also shows exhibitions there.

Numerous historical buildings can be seen in Zündorf: In “Oberündorf” the old church of St. Martin and the Börschhof (formerly Abtshof), a closed courtyard from 1780/81. The two-storey mansion and the single-storey farm buildings are made of brick. Half-timbered houses , old trading houses, the synagogue used as a residential building , the parish church of St. Mariae Birth, the old church of St. Michael, the former monastery chapel and the tower courtyard from the 14th century are particularly worth seeing in "Niederündorf" . The historic building attached to the tower was used as a restaurant for a long time at the end of the 20th century, but is now used for residential purposes again. The present mansion was built in 1771. The churches of St. Martin and St. Michael are among the smaller Romanesque churches in Cologne.

Incorporation

The city of Cologne tried since 1923 to incorporate the city of Porz with the suburb of Zündorf. As part of the local reorganization , it was incorporated into Cologne on January 1, 1975 . Later attempts to reverse this, for example via the Kettwig Circle, failed.

Jewish community

In Zündorf there was a Jewish community with a synagogue on the main street. The Salomon family operated in Marktstr. 7 a popular butcher shop. The Jews were expelled during the Hitler era and some were murdered. The synagogue was converted into a residential building. Today the Jewish cemetery on Gartenweg still reminds of this time. Funerals took place there between 1930 and 1940.

Ferries, shipping

Since Zündorf was on the Rhine, it is likely that the river has been crossed by boats there for centuries. However, until the 17th century, no dutiable goods, vehicles or cattle were allowed to cross the Rhine between Mondorf and Cologne-Deutz . In 1317 a "ferry connection from Zündorf to Weiß" is described for the first time. The first ferryman mentioned seems to have been a Johannem Gilles.

In 1869 Matthias Weber from Zündorf created the first connection to Cologne with a screw steamer, from which the "Weberschiff" company, which still exists in Cologne today, developed. In 1909 and 1911 respectively, Balthasar Platz applied for ferry connections from the old arm of the Rhine to Porz and Weiß from the restoration "Zur Rheinlust" (today Groov-Terrassen). There was also a "market shipping" from Zündorf to Cologne.

The Zündorf - Weiß ferry service was discontinued around 1953. In 1987 Heiko Dietrich received the approval to set up a ferry service between Zündorf and Weiß. In September he started ferry operations with a converted small Dutch ship, the “Frika”, followed later by the smaller boats “Krokodil” and “Krokolino”, which he uses depending on the company. Today (2010) it drives daily in summer, there is a break in winter and only on Sundays and public holidays in the transition periods.
