History and use

After different owners, the Engelshof was sold to the city of Cologne after 40 years. During the agricultural use phase, up to 60 cows and cattle and 10 horses were kept on the farm. During the Second World War, the courtyard was repeatedly damaged until it was finally impossible to live in an air mine in the courtyard in October 1944. Several horses and around 20 cows were killed. The residents moved out until the end of the war, the orders for the fields were taken over by the soldiers of the surrounding barracks under air raids. 100 quintals of potatoes were sold against coupons. After the tenant's death in 1969, the relatives finally gave up farming in 1971. Some roofs were still covered or burned down and only partially restored, so that the courtyard fell apart while it was vacant. When it threatened to be demolished in May 1976, one was foundedCitizens' initiative to preserve it.

The City Council of Cologne decided in 1988 to rebuild the facility while preserving the monument and historical character. 80% of it was funded by the state with 5.5 million DM. The community center Engelshof that emerged from this renovated the courtyard complex in self-help and has been offering cultural and leisure events as well as further training since it reopened on May 7, 1994. Twice a year there is an arts and crafts market in Engelshof with over 100 exhibitors. The city of Cologne, which initially co-managed part of the civic center , namely the large hall in the left wing, stopped its financial support in 2005, so that it is now completely independent and has the lowest budget of all the civic centers in the city. The association Civic Center Engelshof has at the beginning of 2011, 60 members.
