St. Severin is a Roman Catholic church in Cologne-Lövenich in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is essentially a Romanesque pillar basilica .

history

In a document dated to the year 1028, possessions in Lövenich were donated to the Brauweiler Abbey by Count Palatine Ezzo . The Lövenich Church is also mentioned in the same document. However, this document is possibly a forgery of the Brauweiler Konvent from the 12th century. Since St. Severin is dated to the 12th century by art historians, there was a church in Lövenich at that time, which was later mentioned in the liber valoris around 1300. In 1361 Archbishop Wilhelm von Gennep gave the patronage of the church to the Coming of the Order of St. John in Cologne, St. Johann and Cordula , who owned the church until secularization .

In 1765 the church was badly damaged by fire and in 1858 it was restored and expanded. The side aisles of the flat-roofed, three-aisled Romanesque pillar basilica were extended to the east and the apses were laid down. The former arched choir yoke was designed with an open roof truss as an additional nave yoke to which a neo-Romanesque choir with choir yoke was added. At the same time, most of the old tuff stone masonry was removed from the exterior and replaced with brick , so that the original structure of the church, which is now plastered, can hardly be seen.
