The Škoda Favorit as well as the estate variant Škoda Forman is a front-wheel drive compact car of the Czech brand Škoda , which was manufactured from 1987 and replaced the model series Škoda Type 742 , which was however continued to be built until 1990.

During the construction, the company name changed several times. The model came onto the market under the state-owned company AZNP . In 1990 the company was renamed to Automobilový koncern Škoda and in 1991 to Škoda automobilová . The modern front-wheel drive model was decisive for the gradual takeover of Škoda shares in the Czechoslovak state by Volkswagen AG .

Model history

The Favorit was also offered in the Federal Republic of Germany from March 1989 (it was not available in the GDR before monetary union on July 1, 1990). From 1990 there was also a combination variant under the name Forman .

In Germany, two variants of a 4-cylinder were OHV - spark-ignition engine , each with 1289 cc capacity available: A 40 kW (54 hp) and a payable embodiment 54 PS G-KAT (60 PS U-KAT) strong machine. Both were based on the same engine block. The 1.3i engine with 68 hp introduced in Germany with the revision in 1993 had some changes. These mainly concerned the control part, timing, injection, the intake manifold, the camshaft, pistons and the cylinder head (better guidance of the intake ports). In some export countries there was also a 1137 cc version of the same engine with 38 kW (52 hp) in the 115 model .

After the engines beginning with carburetors were fitted, was a 1993 Monomotronic - manifold injection used. The 54 hp engine was designed for regular gasoline. The consumption was between 6 and 7.5 liters per 100 km, depending on the driving style. The revised engine with the central injection was characterized by reduced fuel consumption, consumption values of less than 6 liters per 100 km were quite achievable. The engine has a camshaft below (camshaft on the side of the engine block), which is driven by a timing chain. Only the 54 hp machine was equipped with a regulated (135 LE / LSE) or unregulated (135 L / LS) catalytic converter.

According to the original plans, it was a closed row with a short version (781, Favorit), a sedan (782), a coupé (783), station wagon (785, Forman), pick-up (787), van (786 ) and ambulance (788). Only the versions 781, 785 and 787 were implemented. The first models were susceptible to rust, with rust often starting on the tailgate and the rear wheel arches. The Favorit / Forman was considered unsusceptible and robust. After the takeover of Škoda by VW in 1991 , there were numerous technical and qualitative improvements in 1993. In the course of the model cycle, small improvements were made to the body, for example the radiator grille.

At the end of 1994, the Favorit / Forman was replaced by the Škoda Felicia . Individual copies of the Favorit / Forman were only registered for the first time in early 1995.
