successor Škoda Octavia II

The Škoda Octavia I is a passenger car from the Czech car manufacturer Škoda, which was produced from late summer 1996 to the end of 2010. The Federal Motor Transport Authority places the Octavia in the compact class , while the specialist press is partly in the middle class .

The Octavia is Škoda's first car in this class after it was taken over by Volkswagen AG in 1991 and, like the VW Golf IV and other Group models, is based on the PQ34 platform . One of the developers' goals was to avoid damaging main parts (such as the bonnet, tailgate) in the event of an impact of up to 15 km / h.

Giorgio Giugiaro drew a design for the Octavia back in the early 1990s . When the model was presented, the then Czech Prime Minister Václav Klaus  - the Czech state was still a partner in Škoda - found the car “too Italian”. Ferdinand Piëch , CEO of the VW group as the main shareholder, followed this point of view, so that a new exterior design was designed.

The new head designer at Škoda, Dirk van Braeckel, was responsible for the new design with the tighter, more angular shape and the larger radiator grille . The goal was a clear profile for the restart of Škoda, instead of a soft, contemporary shape. However, since the tools for the body had already been produced, Giugiaro's design became the basis of the Seat Toledo II . However, the front for Seat was redrawn.

The Octavia was initially offered as a sedan in three trim levels from March 1997: LX, GLX, SLX.

At the end of 1999, the special model " Laurin & Klement " followed, which with its upscale equipment was of particular importance. These included clear glass headlights with cleaning system, 16 inch light alloy rims, electric sliding / lifting glass roof, beige full leather interior with heated seats for driver and front passenger, interior trim in burl wood imitation, leather steering wheel, cruise control, automatic climate control "CLIMATRONIC" and "SYMPHONIC" sound system. This special model was only available in conjunction with the two top engines (1.9 TDI with 81kW / 110PS and 1.8T 20V with 110kW / 150PS).

Even before the revision in autumn 2000, a modified dashboard was installed in the upscale SLX standard equipment and in the “Laurin & Klement” model. All-wheel drive models were also offered.

In 1999, Škoda manufactured limousines that were eight centimeters longer with exclusive equipment for the Czech government, based on the Octavia 1.8T 20V with the "Laurin & Klement" equipment. A total of 200 of these vehicles were built.

Facelift

In September 2000, the Octavia underwent a facelift, in which the dashboard was revised and became standard from the Ambiente / GLX equipment and special models. In addition, the Octavia I received standard clear glass headlights , completely painted bumpers, a revised speedometer design and extended maintenance intervals. There were also design changes, such as roof stiffening between the modified B-pillars, corner stiffeners in the engine compartment, an optimized immobilizer , the recently prescribed OBD interface and another CAN bus for convenience functions. In addition, optional xenon headlights, rain sensors , TMC navigation devices, rear wipers for sedans, electrically adjustable front seats and ESP were offered.

In addition, the equipment variants LX, GLX and SLX were renamed Classic, Ambiente and Elegance, which were later adopted for the Octavia II and other models. In addition, the Octavia RS ( vRS in Great Britain and Ireland ), a sport variant with an output of 132 kW (180 hp), was added to the range. In addition, special models such as Business, Family, Collection, Rider, Drive, Celebration, RS-WRC, Limited GT and Sport came out.

Together with the special edition Celebration, which was released in June 2001 to celebrate the three millionth car since the VW takeover, the Octavia Taxi was also introduced. This made Škoda the first importer in Germany to offer a factory upgrade to a taxi. This expansion cost 2,347 marks (1200 euros) more than the standard model.

In Austria there was a van version of the Octavia called Praktik . In autumn 2008 design details were changed again, such as a modified exterior mirror design and a modified steering wheel, which was taken over from the successor, as well as the omission of the tailgate lock.

The two body variants sedan and station wagon were offered as a special model Tour (in Austria Drive ) parallel to the Octavia II until the end of 2010 .

Due to the changed legal situation in the EU, which from January 1, 2011 only grants approval for new vehicles with Euro 5 , the production of the first Octavia for Europe had to be stopped. The successor for Europe is the Škoda Octavia II introduced in February 2004 . This has been marketed as the Octavia Tour since the end of 2010.

Škoda Octavia RS Combi

Based on the revised model, the Octavia RS was built between autumn 2001 and the beginning of 2006 with a 1.8-liter turbo engine with 132 kW (180 hp), which had a rear spoiler and different bumpers than the other variants and was standard (in Germany) was equipped with xenon headlights.

A total of four color finishes were available: yellow, red, black and silver. There was also a special RS WRC model , which was based on the design of the rally vehicles and was given a white base coat.

Since the Octavia RS was only available as a gasoline engine, a special model called the Limited Edition GT appeared in 2004 , which was only available as a station wagon and with the 96 kW diesel engine. Visually and technically, the Limited Edition GT corresponded to the Octavia RS Combi, but had a different interior with Alcantara leather seats, a black headliner, chrome rings around the rev counter and speedometer, and door panels that matched the interior. Here too, only the four paint finishes of the Octavia RS could be ordered.

Octavia WRC

Škoda Octavia WRC

A World Rally Car was developed based on the Škoda Octavia at the end of the 1990s . The first trips were made in autumn 1998. The 1230 kg vehicle had an all-wheel drive system from Xtrac . The Octavia WRC had a two-liter gasoline engine with four cylinders and turbocharging with around 300 hp (221 kW), with up to 600 Nm of torque being generated. The Octavia WRC could be accelerated from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.9 seconds with the manual six-speed gearbox. The driving behavior was described as slightly oversteering .

In 2001 the Octavia took fourth place in the Rally Great Britain and third place in the Rallye Safari . In 2001, Škoda Motorsport also won the Czech rally championship. During the Monte Carlo Rally on January 19, 2002, an incident occurred when the Roman Kresta / Jan Tománek team misjudged themselves in a left turn and broke through a wall with their car. A telegraph pole of Telecom Fracé that was not dismantled only prevented a crash. Matthias Kahle and co-driver Peter Göbel won the German Rally Championship (DRM) with him in 2002 and 2004 , and in 2003 they took second place. For the 2005 rally season, the Octavia at Škoda Motorsport was replaced by the Škoda Fabia WRC . However, the Octavia WRC was still driven at rally events. The Octavia WRC was last used in June 2012 at the Krkonoše Rally .
