The vehicles for the Asian markets come from the production of Shanghai Volkswagen . The market launch in Germany was on October 20, 2012. Facelift 2017

In March 2017, a renewed model of the Rapid was presented at the Geneva Motor Show : in addition to the two new three-cylinder engines with one liter displacement (95 and 110 hp), which replace the 1.2-liter engines, the Modernized design: the front apron was redesigned and received new fog lights. The rear lights were colored black. The main headlights have been using bi-xenon lights since spring 2017. The daytime running lights are optionally equipped with LED technology and are located in the main headlights. This LED unit is also the LED turn signal. The new light assistant, which automatically switches on the headlights when required, allows permanent high beam and illuminates the area around the vehicle, rounds off the facelift. Infotainment systems with internet access and online services have also been integrated for the Rapid.

The Rapid was introduced in October 2012 as a hatchback sedan with a large tailgate. Since September 2013 it has also been available in a shorter version with a hatchback called the Rapid Spaceback . The engine range for both versions is identical, only the smallest engine with 55 kW is not available for the Rapid Spaceback.
