The Škoda Scala is a compact class passenger car from the Czech manufacturer Škoda Auto . It succeeds the Škoda Rapid Spaceback, which has been available since 2012 . The Scala went on sale on May 18, 2019. Unlike the previous model, it will no longer be available as a hatchback sedan. The name comes from Latin and means "ladder" or "stairs". The automobile is produced in Škoda’s main plant in Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic .

Model history

With the predecessor model Rapid, journalists from the motor press criticized the narrow passenger compartment, the less comfortable suspension and the poor workmanship compared to the VW Golf VII and other compact class models . This was not least due to the use of components and a platform from the small car class . With the Scala, the manufacturer wants to establish itself more successfully in the compact class. The Scala is 107 mm longer than the VW Golf VII and has around 10 mm more wheelbase. The models differ only slightly in width. Overall, the new vehicle has grown significantly compared to the Rapid. As with the predecessor, the tailgate is again available with an extended glass pane. The lead designers were Jozef Kabaň and Oliver Stefani.

Design study Vision RS

Škoda presented the Škoda Vision RS study at the Paris Motor Show in October 2018 . This study is about 4.36 m long and has a front-mounted engine (1.5 TSI with 150 PS). In front of the rear wheels, 13 kWh batteries for the electric motor with 75 kW (102 PS) are installed for the hybrid drive. Power is transmitted by a dual clutch transmission (DQ400e). The specified maximum speed is 210 km / h. The purely electric range should be 70 km. As a show car, the vehicle in Paris had illuminated grille struts. At the rear, a red strip of lights was embedded in the rear apron. The previously common round logo on the rear was dispensed with; instead, the brand name ŠKODA was written horizontally in letters on the lower part of the rear window .

On the inside, due to the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia, seams and flags in the national colors blue, white and red were incorporated. The display instruments were completely digital, analog round instruments were not used. As in the Audi A6 C8, the air conditioning is controlled via a touchscreen.

Presentation of the production vehicle

After journalists speculated about historical Škoda model names such as Felicia , Garde , Spaceback or Popular , Škoda announced on October 15, 2018 that the new generation of a compact class car would be called Scala .

Motor press journalists were allowed to take their first test drives in near-production, masked vehicles in the Bohemian Paradise . As part of the marketing, the vehicle was decorated and presented by the Czech street artist Chemis in a colorful camouflage look in front of Prague's John Lennon Wall at the end of November . The Scala thus became an art object in public space. Even before the production model was presented in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Israel on December 6, 2018, Škoda published photos of the interior.

Description and equipment

inner space

The following assistance systems are available for the five-door car :

The electronic stability program (ESP) is standard in all model variants . The trunk holds 467 liters, with the rear seats folded down it is 1410 liters. A glass panorama roof is available for the vehicle. The Scala is the first vehicle in its class to be available with an electrically operated tailgate. Headlights and taillights are optionally fully equipped with light-emitting diodes ; then a dynamic indicator is also installed. One detail is a fold-out funnel integrated in the refill nozzle for the washer fluid.

The digital speedometer ( Virtual Cockpit ) with different functions and five display forms, available as an option, is 10.25 inches in size. The central touch screen of the infotainment system can be up to 9.2 inches, alternatively there is the system with 6.5 or 8 inches. Android Auto and Apple Car Play are standard. With Škoda Connect , the Scala is connected to the Internet and other online services via LTE as standard . Over-the-air updates are possible.

Technology and motorization

Like other models with a transversely installed engine from the Volkswagen Group that have appeared since 2012, for example the Audi A1 (2018) , the Scala is based on the " Modular Transverse Toolkit " (MQB A0) platform , albeit in the longest possible variant. Skoda states that the c w value is 0.29.

The front wheels are individually suspended on MacPherson struts and triangular wishbones . A torsion beam axle is installed at the rear . Depending on the equipment variant, the dampers can be adjusted in two modes (normal and sport) with a switch. The system is called Škoda Sport Chassis Preset and is also known under the term adaptive chassis , the chassis is 15 mm lower than the standard version. In sport mode, the electronics let more air into the dampers via a valve so that the chassis reacts harder, in other words subjectively "sporty", to driving maneuvers. In normal mode there is less air in the dampers, so that the chassis reacts to driving maneuvers more smoothly, i.e. subjectively more comfortably. These settings (Driving Mode Select) also affect the rack and pinion steering , which with electromechanical power assistance is provided.

Motorization

The basic engine in the Scala is a three-cylinder engine (1.0 TSI) with 70 kW (95 PS). With him, the power is transmitted via a 5-speed gearbox. All other engines are either equipped with a 6-speed gearbox or a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox ( DSG ). Another engine is a more powerful 1.0 TSI with 85 kW (115 PS). The 1.5 TSI with 110 kW (150 PS) and cylinder deactivation (initially with 7-speed DSG, later with 6-speed manual transmission) and a diesel (1.6 TDI) with 85 kW (115 PS) and 250 Nm.

Later, a natural gas variant (TGI or G-Tec) with a 6-speed gearbox will follow based on the three-cylinder engine. This alternative drive will generate 66 kW (90 hp). Around 14 kg of natural gas (CNG) can be filled into the gas bottles; the natural gas variant is equipped with a tank for premium gasoline to increase the range .

All engines comply with the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard . The exhaust gases from the 1.6 TDI diesel engine are cleaned using a diesel particulate filter , an oxidation catalytic converter and a selective reducing catalytic converter (SCR). The AdBlue urea solution required for selective catalytic reduction is carried in a 12-liter tank. The emission of particles in gasoline engines is reduced with gasoline particle filters . As has been the case for decades in vehicles with gasoline engines, the exhaust gas aftertreatment is also supported by a catalytic converter.
