The VW EA211 (EA = development contract) or modular gasoline engine kit is a gasoline engine series from Volkswagen AG with three and four cylinders. The engine generation has been used in various vehicles of the Volkswagen Group since 2011 and is the successor to the VW EA111 series . The common features of all engines of the EA 211 series include four-valve technology , the drive of the two overhead camshafts ( DOHC valve control ) via a maintenance-free toothed belt and the exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head .
technology
Base engine
The cylinder crankcase is made of an aluminum alloy , the cylinder liners are made of gray cast iron . Simply by changing from gray cast iron to aluminum crankcase, a weight saving of 16 kg could be achieved with the 1.4 l engine compared to its predecessor (EA111). The cylinder head is manufactured from the alloy AlSi10Mg (Cu) using the aluminum chill casting process. Another common feature of all engines is the cylinder spacing of 82 mm.
Valve train
All variants have four valves per cylinder, which are operated by the two overhead camshafts ( DOHC valve control ) via roller rocker arms. The camshafts are driven by the crankshaft via a maintenance-free toothed belt . All engines have a stepless adjustment of the inlet camshaft by means of hydraulic phase adjusters. The 1.4 TSI engines from 103 kW also have an adjustment of the exhaust camshaft.
Charging and exhaust
The weaker versions of the 1.0-l three-cylinder engine have intake manifold injection and no charging . That is why they are also referred to by Volkswagen as “MPI” motors (Multipoint Injection).
The more powerful versions of the three-cylinder and all four-cylinders, on the other hand, have direct injection and a turbocharger with a single-scroll turbine. Volkswagen uses the brand name " TSI " for these engines . Depending on the variant, different turbochargers are used, which differ primarily in the dimensions of the turbine and compressor wheels. The material of the turbocharger is designed for exhaust gas temperatures of up to 950 ° C. For better cooling, the turbocharger is integrated into the cooling circuit of the charge air cooling. The wastegate flap is operated by an electric boost pressure actuator with an integrated position transmitter.
All engines have a three-way catalytic converter . From 2017, a gasoline particulate filter (OPF) will also be used for some variants . It is a closed particle filter. In contrast to a diesel particulate filter , however, due to the higher exhaust gas temperatures of the gasoline engine, it does not require active regeneration.
cooling
All engines are liquid-cooled . The high-temperature cooling circuit of the engine cooling system is divided into two circuits, one for the cylinder block and one for the cylinder head, in order to accelerate the warm-up. Each circuit has its own thermostat.
There is also a low-temperature cooling circuit for indirect charge air cooling. The cooling of the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger is also integrated into this circuit. The low-temperature circuit has an electrically driven coolant pump, which means, for example, that the turbocharger can be cooled even after the vehicle has been switched off.

1.0 l three-cylinder (1.0 MPI)
The displacement of the three-cylinder in - line engine is 999 cm³ with a bore of 74.5 mm and a stroke of 76.4 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 82 mm. The compression of the 44 kW and 55 kW variants is 10.5. The 50 kW variant has a compression of 11.5 and is only used in vehicles with natural gas drive.

The displacement of the three-cylinder in - line engine is 999 cm³ with a bore of 74.5 mm and a stroke of 76.4 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 82 mm. The compression is 10.5. The crankcase is manufactured from the alloy AlSi9Cu3 using the aluminum die casting process. In the 70 kW variant, full valves made of high-alloy steel are used, the higher-performance variants from 81 kW have sodium-cooled outlet valves.

The displacement of the four-cylinder in - line engine is 1197 cm³ with a bore of 71.0 mm and a stroke of 75.6 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 82 mm. The compression is 10.5. According to DIN, the motor weighs 97 kg. The 1.2 TSI was initially offered in two performance levels with 63 kW and 77 kW, the performance variants are achieved through modified software. The maximum boost pressure for the 63 kW variant is 1.7 bar and for the 77 kW variant 1.9 bar.

The displacement of the four-cylinder in - line engine is 1395 cm³ with a bore of 74.5 mm and a stroke of 80.0 mm, with a cylinder spacing of 82 mm. The compression is 10.5. In the 90 kW variant, the motor weighs 104 kg according to DIN, and 106 kg in the 103 kW variant. While the 90 kW variant only has intake camshaft adjustment , the 103 kW variant has intake and exhaust camshaft adjustment. The 103 or 110 kW engine is also available in a version with cylinder deactivation (at Volkswagen: Active Cylinder Management, ACT; at Audi: Cylinders on Demand, CoD).
