The VW T-Cross (internal: Type C1) is a compact SUV from Volkswagen . It is based on the MQB-A0 platform ( modular transverse matrix ) and came onto the market in April 2019. In Europe, the car is positioned below the T-Roc and is the smallest SUV model from Volkswagen.

According to the definition by Jato Dynamics, the T-Cross belongs globally (like T-Roc) to the B-SUV segment, a segment with the largest market shares in India and Brazil (around 70%) followed by Europe (37%). A slight increase in length and the emergence of an A-SUV segment below 4.10 m are predicted. In India, this segment is already being served with the Tata Nexon , Mahindra XUV 300 or the Honda WR-V .

Volkswagen covers the length class 4.10 to 4.30 m globally with two wheelbase variants of the T-Cross: short wheelbase 2548 mm (see Polo VI 2564 mm) and long wheelbase 2651 mm (like Škoda Kamiq ). In addition to T-Cross, VW uses other model names such as Tacqua (North China), VW Taigun (India) and VW Nivus (coupé derivative, Brazil) in other markets . The T-Roc, based on the more complex and expensive MQB-A1 platform, plays a subordinate role globally (e.g. as an all-wheel drive / 4MOTION or convertible version).

history

The history of modern SUVs based on small cars goes back a long way to the 2000s, so Daimler wanted a Smart Formore to roll off the assembly line in Brazil as early as 2006. Volkswagen also dealt with this segment and presented the 3.86 m long Taigun Concept at the International Motor Show in São Paulo at the end of 2012 (based on New Small Family / up!). The planned production in Brazil did not take place, but the design theft by the Chinese from Jiangsu Lake Motors caused a stir.

At Volkswagen, the time was bridged with covered and raised variants of the Fox and Polo models . The Polo Fun based on the Polo IV (Type 9N) was introduced in 2004 and offered as a CrossPolo from 2006, always as a 5-door model (2010 to 2014 based on the Polo V , production in Uitenhage, South Africa). The cross versions of the VW Fox, which have been produced in Brazil since 2005, never officially made it to Germany.

At the 86th Geneva Motor Show in March 2016, the VW T-Cross Breeze concept vehicle gave an outlook on an SUV model in the format of the Polo and the first-time use of the T-Cross designation . In contrast to the production version, this vehicle is a four-seater convertible with a soft top. Outwardly, it resembles the VW T-Roc Concept presented two years earlier . The T-Cross Breeze is 4.13 meters long, 1.80 meters wide and 1.56 meters high. The concept vehicle is powered by a one-liter TSI engine with 81 kW (110 PS) and 175 Nm torque. The 1250 kg heavy T-Cross Breeze should accelerate to 100 km / h in 10.3 seconds, the top speed is specified as 188 km / h. The standard consumption should be 5.0 liters per 100 km.

The series vehicle, designed as a station wagon , was officially presented on October 25, 2018 in Amsterdam , Shanghai and São Paulo and has since been available as a 1st edition . The T-Cross has been delivered since April 19, 2019.

At the beginning of November 2019, FAW-Volkswagen presented the almost identical VW Tacqua. This means that two models of the series will be sold in China - the T-Cross is built by SAIC Volkswagen . This market positioning is not uncommon in China, for example Toyota also offers the Toyota C-HR as Toyota Izoa or Honda also offers the Honda HR-V as Honda XR-V .

technology

The T-Cross is based on the MQB-A0 platform from Volkswagen AG , which the Group also uses for the VW Polo VI , Audi A1 GB , Seat Ibiza 6F and Seat Arona models . The European model has a rear seat that can be slid by 14 centimeters and, optionally, a foldable passenger backrest.

production

Production of the T-Cross started almost simultaneously at the following three locations on three different continents:

  • Pamplona , Spain, Volkswagen Navarra SA (Polo main plant since 1984, key figures 2018: output 272,272 vehicles of which 231 T-Cross, employees 4,764, area 1.63 km², of which 22% built on)
  • São José dos Pinhais , Curitiba , Paraná, Volkswagen do Brasil (Fox main plant since 2003, output approx. 200,000 vehicles, employees approx. 3,000 with T-Cross, area 1.3 km², of which 26% are built on)
  • Anting , Shanghai, China, SAIC Volkswagen (SVW) (JV plants since 1988, Anting plants 1–3: output approx. 500,000 vehicles, employees approx. 20,000 including engine plants 1–2)

Further production sites followed:

  • VW Tacqua since October 2019 in Changchun, Jilin, China, FAW-Volkswagen (FAW-VW) (JV since 1991, Audi main plant, 2018 output 511,177 vehicles)
  • VW Taigun, expected from mid-2020 in Chakan, Pune, Maharashtra, India, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd. (Conversion to MQB, capacity approx. 200,000 vehicles, area 2.3 km²)

The supply of the individual markets is closely linked to the technical concept (wheelbase, emissions standard) and local positioning and competitive situation. Pamplona supplies mature markets that are well covered and differentiated at the top (T-Roc, Tiguan). With the long version, Curitiba supplies emerging markets in which the T-Cross is positioned higher up. The next larger SUV model in Latin America is usually only the long version of the Tiguan (Allspace) , below the T-Cross some SUV-like versions of the VW Fox are offered ( e.g. Crossfox in Peru or Fox Xtreme in Brazil). Anting (T-Cross) and Changchun (Tacqua) only supply the local chauffeur market in China with the long version running under VW216 / 0 CN. The T-Roc built by FAW-VW is offered in parallel with a normal wheelbase in China. In Pune (India) the Taigun (right-hand drive with long wheel base) is produced for the local market together with its Skoda counterpart.

  • from Pamplona (Spain): Europe, Australia, Great Britain, Japan and South Africa (last three right-hand drive)
  • from Curitiba (Brazil): Latin America, Africa (without South Africa), Asia (without China)

Registration numbers

In the first sales year of 2019, 23,718 VW T-Crosses - 887 of them with diesel engines - were newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. 11th place in SUVs (leading T-Roc with 58,898).

In the first sales year 2019, 37,081 VW T-Crosses were newly registered in Brazil, 21st place for passenger cars, 6th place for SUVs (leading Jeep Renegade & Compass with> 60,000 each).

Competitor

Similar to the more recent VW past (for example the VW Touran I 2003 and Opel Zafira A 1999), the T-Cross is again an example of the belated takeover of an already successful vehicle concept. Three key elements are characteristic in this case - as with the Ford EcoSport since 2012 or the Jeep Renegade since 2014.

  1. Transfer of the SUV concept to the small car class (distinctive two-box design with high bonnet, high practicality and economy of space with an upright seating position)
  2. Adoption of design elements of established SUV models of the brand (Tiguan, Touareg ), popularization (low price, emerging market) and better environmental compatibility of SUVs
  3. Conception as a universal “world car”, consideration of a wide range of requirements (for example ethanol / E85 operation, bad road requirements, costs / purchasing power), high numbers in a global production network, strong importance of Brazil (similar to the USA for larger SUVs) and India (EU proximity for example diesel and standardization, hope for "the next China")

While the Ford EcoSport was subsequently adapted for Europe as a model originally developed for "BrasIndia" (for example, the spare wheel at the rear was omitted, but the flap itself was hinged on the side until the end, production for Europe initially in India, since 2017 in Romania) the T-Cross is a vehicle developed in parallel and top-down. The Indian version was co-developed from the start based on a slimmed-down IN specification.

The most important T-Cross competitors (based on comparison tests, sales figures, localization) at the market launch are listed below.
