The VW Corrado (type 53i) is a sports coupé from the Volkswagen brand that was manufactured from autumn 1988 to mid-1995. The Federal Motor Transport Authority assigns the Corrado to the middle class segment .
Model history
General
In May 1981, VW began work on a successor model for the recently launched Scirocco II under development order (EA) 494 . The technical basis for the car planned as the successor to the Scirocco was formed by the VW Golf II , while the Scirocco II was still based on the Golf I.
The Scirocco III (later called Corrado ) was to go into series production as a technological image carrier in 1986 or in model year 1987 at a lower price than the current Scirocco II. However, the car turned out to be too expensive for the direct successor. In addition, the engine selection could not be compared with that of the Scirocco range. This squaring of the circle was resolved in December 1984 by the formula: "Scirocco 3 plus Scirocco 2 continuation". The Scirocco III or Corrado should be positioned on the market as a technology carrier and as a high-quality sports coupe.
It was also planned to continue producing the Scirocco II at least until 1988 in addition to the new model and to find a successor to the inexpensive sports coupé based on the Polo platform. However, since no cheap coupé below the Corrado could be developed to market maturity, the Scirocco remained on sale four years longer than planned. With the upgrading of the Corrado to the sports car and after the sales figures for the Scirocco II, which had declined until September 1991, its production was stopped in September 1992.
From March 1986 the EA 494 was carried out in the tradition of the names of winches at VW ( Passat , Scirocco , etc.) under the project name "Taifun". However, since a typhoon is primarily associated with destruction, the decision was made in favor of "Corrado". The name Corrado comes from the Spanish word correr (German "to run").
When the Corrado was presented in October 1988, the special features were the rear wing , which on the European model automatically extends from 120 km / h (75 km / h on the US model) and retracts again from 20 km / h (in a similar form, a few months later also found on the Porsche 911 (type 964) ), which is supposed to reduce the lift on the rear axle by up to 64%, as well as the G-Lader , with which the Corrado G60 was the only model, and which was extensive for the time Standard equipment: ABS, power steering, height-adjustable sports seats, fog lights, green color heat-insulating glass and electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors (painted in body color).
Overall, the Corrado was a technical mixture of Golf II and III and Passat B3 or B4 in its almost seven years of construction . Production ended in June 1995.
Facelift
After the factory holidays in August 1991, models with 16V and VR6 units were presented in Germany. Some changes were made:
To install the larger VR6 engine, it was necessary to redesign the front cross member and change the bonnet. The measure was supplemented by wider front fenders , wider front apron with a more modern radiator grille , slightly modified rear bumper, new fog lights and front indicator units, as well as new headlights .
Other features of this facelift:
- the tank was enlarged from 55 l to 70 l
- the trunk has been reduced from 300 liters to 235 liters
- new color variants for the fabrics
- EDS with VR6 engine series
After the factory holidays in August 1992, the Corrado got a redesigned interior.
The changes included:
- Center console redesigned
- Power window switches directly on the door pockets above the speakers, instead of inside the door panel
- Door panel revised
- Mirror adjustment switch in the newly designed door pull handle instead of in the middle of the door panel
- Ventilation (rotary control instead of slider)
- Toggle switch replaced by pressure switch
- Air outlet vents in the dashboard are more rounded and raised
- Display instruments with new font, red pointers and concise "Corrado" lettering in the rev counter
- A split rear bench seat as standard equipment only on VR6 models
With the presentation of the 2.0 8V in April 1993, the G60 and only one year later, in July 1994, the 16V was taken out of the range. From August 1994, the Corrado was also available with airbags for the driver and passenger side on request. The glove compartment was omitted here.
