The VW Passat B4 (Type 3A) is a mid-range model from Volkswagen . It was presented in autumn 1993 as the successor to the VW Passat B3 . It is not a completely new vehicle, but a comprehensive further development of the Passat B3.
The car was produced between October 1993 and May 1997 at the VW plant in Emden and at Volkswagen Bratislava . In October 1996 the sedan of the B4 was replaced by the successor VW Passat B5 , the Variant followed six months later.
Model history
General
As a further development of the B3, the Passat B4 differed in numerous details, but was essentially based on the previous model. Details of the design and the technology have been changed. The facelift was designed rather conservatively, the car should look more conventional again, since the predecessor with the front grillless front was perceived by many buyers as too radical. In addition to double headlights, the B4 now had a real radiator grille, the so-called “happy face” grill, instead of the single round “nostril” with the front VW emblem. The front indicators have been integrated into the bumpers. The longitudinal bead on the body flank above the door handles has been removed. The rear of the car has also been visually redesigned. The B4 has larger taillights and a revised rear flap. On the body side, the finish, which was sometimes poor in the last generation, has also been improved. The seats received new covers and the fittings new switches and dials.
technology
As far as it was possible as part of a facelift, the Passat was brought up to the state of the art of safety technology at the time. When the demands for the serial installation of airbags became louder in Germany as a result of the accident attempts initiated by the magazine “Auto, Motor und Sport”, Volkswagen was one of the first mass manufacturers to develop an airbag for mid-range and compact vehicles, the so-called “Eurobag” ". This had been offered as an option in the Passat B3 since 1992. In Germany it was now available as standard in the Passat B4 together with a front passenger airbag. In addition, the Passat was now equipped with ABS, side impact protection and pyrotechnic belt tensioners as standard. In addition to the security standards of the previous model , which were quite high for their time , stable profiles were built into the doors of the B4 as side impact protection. In addition, the airbags for driver and front passenger , which were previously only available at an extra charge, were now installed as standard in conjunction with seat belt tensioners .
Another shortcoming, the jittery cable control of the previous model (actually borrowed technology from the Golf ), has been replaced by a revised version. In the B4 model, Volkswagen used a TDI engine , an electronically controlled diesel engine with direct injection , for the first time . The engine had four cylinders, a displacement of 1.9 liters and was introduced in the Golf at the same time . Technically, it represents a further development of the 2.5-liter five-cylinder TDI engine presented in the Audi 100 in 1989 , was installed across the direction of travel in the Passat and, in contrast to the five-cylinder, had an air mass meter for the first time . The high demand initially ensured long delivery times for the TDI. The engine developed 66 kW (90 hp) and had a torque of 202 Nm at 1900 rpm. Towards the end of the production time of the B4 (in the course of the 1996 model year ), it was supplemented by a more powerful variant with 81 kW (110 PS). This was recognizable from the outside by a red flag on the right in the TDI logo. The powerful diesel was the first to have a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry and achieved a torque of 235 Nm at 1900 rpm.
Passat VR6 / VR6 Syncro
Since the beginning of the model, the Passat B4 has been available in both body versions, i.e. sedan / variant, again with the 2.8l VR6 engine with 128 kW / 174 hp known from the Golf . A maximum torque of 240 Nm at 4200 rpm (with Super 98 RON) gives the Passat equipped in this way superior performance with a top speed of 224 km / h. 100 km / h is reached from standstill in just 8.7 seconds, and in 5th gear only 13.0 seconds go from 60 to 100 km / h.
The top model of the Passat series and thus the most expensive and largest vehicle from Volkswagen at the time was the Passat VR6 Syncro Exclusiv , which was offered in October 1994 one year after the market launch .
It was only offered as a "Variant" station wagon version.
As in the Golf 3 VR6 Syncro, the six-cylinder enlarged to 2.9l was used together with the well-known and proven all-wheel drive system with viscous coupling from the Passat G60 and Golf. However, compared to the Corrado and Golf, the output was reduced by 5 kW (6 PS) to 184 PS because the Passat was designed as a touring car and family vehicle. According to Volkswagen Classic, the power was also reduced in order to adapt the torque curve to use under adverse conditions - e.g. B. in trailer operation - adapt. 2.9 liter displacement, 184 hp, a top speed of over 220 km / h, permanent Syncro all-wheel drive and exclusive equipment with velor or leather symbolized the exceptional position within the Passat series. Due to the relatively small number of units, it is still a sought-after and coveted model today, the price trend is pointing upwards.
