The Magotan, introduced in 2007, was initially only available as a four-door notchback sedan based on the VW Passat B6 . In late 2010, a station wagon followed under the independent model name VW Variant . Volkswagen did not want to use the name Magotan because, unlike the sedan, the station wagon was not built in China but imported from Germany. Since the variant was therefore significantly more expensive, the manufacturer wanted to differentiate between the two variants.
