The VW Routan is an MPV model from the Volkswagen brand . Since spring 2008 it has only been manufactured for the North American market at the Chrysler plant in Windsor , Canada .

Model history

The Routan was derived from the fifth generation Chrysler Voyager introduced in spring 2008 using badge engineering . It was therefore larger than the VW Sharan , but was offered in the USA from 27,000 US dollars (around 22,000 €). The smaller Sharan, however, started in Germany from € 28,725.

In the first few years, a 3.8 liter V6 petrol engine with 145 kW (197 hp) served as the basic engine. A 4.0 liter engine with an output of 189 kW (253 hp) was available for an extra charge. From the end of 2010 there was only one engine: a 3.6 liter V6 with 208 kW (283 hp).

Criticisms of the Routan were u. a. the poor material quality in the interior and a consumption of more than 12 liters per 100 km in the American standard cycle .

But not only qualitatively, but also commercially, the Routan was a major failure for Volkswagen. Annual production of 45,000 to 50,000 units was planned; in fact, only 57,683 units were manufactured in the five years from 2008 to 2013, i.e. not even a quarter of the planned production.

Production ended in 2013.
