The first version of the Polo IV was officially presented at the IAA in Frankfurt am Main in September 2001 and built after its market launch in November 2001 until it was replaced by the revised model on April 30, 2005.

Technically the vehicle based on the same platform as Seat Ibiza (6L) , Seat Cordoba (6L) and Fabia I . The body is compared to the previous generation 15.4 centimeters longer and therefore the external dimensions approximately reached the Volkswagen Golf II . The 5.3 centimeter longer wheelbase primarily benefits the legroom of the passengers in the rear . The trunk, which has also been enlarged, holds 270 liters in the standard configuration and can be expanded to up to 1030 liters by folding down the rear seat.

The front of the vehicle is optically based on the design of the Volkswagen Lupo with its four round clear-glass headlights .

safety

German vehicles are equipped with ABS and speed-dependent power steering as standard. In conjunction with the optionally available ESP , a hydraulic brake assistant is used for the first time in the Polo IV , which can shorten the stopping distance in a dangerous situation .

The driver and front passenger are protected by standard front and side airbags and belt tensioners with belt force limiters . Head airbags for the front seats were available at an additional cost from 2002. In the event of an accident, the pedals in the driver's footwell are moved away from the driver's body to reduce the risk of injury to the leg area.

In Euro NCAP - Crash test the Polo IV four out of five stars in the evaluation of occupant safety and four stars in the evaluation of pedestrian safety peaked in of 2002.

Special models

From the end of 2003 the special model Special , available exclusively with five doors, was built, the basic equipment of which included an alarm system , electric windows, central locking , 16-inch alloy wheels and an MP3- compatible radio from Volkswagen Individual .

At the beginning of 2004, the special Cricket model was offered, which expanded the standard equipment with, among other things, automatically dimming interior mirrors, CD changers , power windows, cruise control , air conditioning , rain sensors and central locking.

The special GT model was also available from the beginning of 2004, the basic equipment of which included a sports suspension that was about 15 millimeters lower and 16-inch light-alloy wheels, electric windows and central locking. Gasoline engines and diesel engines from 55 kW (75 hp) were available as engines .

Model variants

In the course of time, several variants of the first version of the Polo IV were offered, which differed from the normal production version not only in terms of modified basic equipment, but also had changes to the body.

Polo sedan (type 9N2)

VW Polo sedan (2003-2005)

The Polo sedan called notchback variant of the Polo IV was built from October 2003 in Brazil and imported from there to Europe. From the B-pillar onwards, the vehicles have a separate body that is 28 centimeters longer than the hatchback version. This gives the occupants more space in the rear and the load volume of the trunk increases from 270 liters in the hatchback to 432 liters. The basic equipment of the vehicles includes electric windows and central locking.

Polo fun

VW Polo Fun (2004-2005)

The Polo Fun developed by Volkswagen Individual was introduced in spring 2004. Originally it was only planned as a special model with 5000 units built, but due to the high demand it was soon established as a separate model variant. Outwardly, the Polo Fun, which is only available with five doors, differs from the normal version of the Polo in its off-road look, based on an SUV , with its own front and rear apron, plastic covers on the fenders, sills and doors, roof rails, standard fog lights and 17-inch light-alloy wheels from BBS . The roof rails and exterior mirror housings were always painted silver, regardless of the exterior color of the vehicle. The standard equipment included sports seats for the driver and front passenger, a leather steering wheel, central locking with radio remote control, power windows and a cassette radio . The engines available were petrol engines from 40 to 74 kW and diesel engines with 55 and 74 kW output.

As standard, the vehicles have a chassis with around 15 millimeters more ground clearance and tighter tuning, which was also available for the normal series at an additional cost, but are only partially suitable for off-road use due to the lack of all-wheel drive .

Engines

When the Polo IV was launched, three different engines were initially available: A completely newly developed 3-cylinder gasoline engine with 1.2 liter displacement and 47 kW (64 hp) output, the 4-cylinder gasoline engine with 1.4 already available in the predecessor liters and 55 kW (75 hp), which is also already available in the previous 3-cylinder TDI - diesel engine with 1.4 liter displacement and 55 kW (75 hp). A short time later there was also a newly developed 3-cylinder gasoline engine with 1.2 liter displacement and 40 kW (55 hp) output, a 4-cylinder SDI diesel engine with 1.9 liter displacement and 47 kW (64 hp) and a 4-cylinder TDI diesel engine with a displacement of 1.9 liters and an output of 74 kW (100 hp) is also available.

From January 2002 another petrol engine known from its predecessor with 1.4 liter displacement and an output of 74 kW (100 hp) was available. In April 2002, a gasoline engine with FSI technology followed, which achieved an output of 63 kW (86 hp) with a displacement of 1.4 liters.

In October 2003 the most powerful TDI engine was introduced, which developed an output of 96 kW (130 hp) from a displacement of 1.9 liters and thus marked the top engine of the first version of the Polo IV.

All gasoline engines already met the requirements of the Euro 4 emissions standard when they were introduced . The diesel engines initially only achieved a classification in the Euro 3 standard. While the TDI engines were revised over time in order to achieve Euro 4 classification, the 47 kW SDI engine only met the requirements of class Euro 3 during its entire construction period.

Advance sales of the revised Polo IV began on March 14, 2005. After the official market launch on April 30, 2005, this version was built until May 2009. The modernized version differed from its predecessor mainly through various external changes, whereas the underlying technology remained largely the same. The standard equipment of the vehicles was upgraded with electric window regulators and central locking, the chassis was modified and tuned more tightly.

The front of the vehicle bears the current “corporate face” of the Volkswagen brand at the time of market launch with a V-shaped crest grille. The design of the clear-glass headlights is based on the Volkswagen Golf V , the bonnet and front fenders have been redesigned. The side indicators were moved from the fenders into the housings of the exterior mirrors and implemented using LED technology. The look of the tailgate was slightly modified with a lower rear window, the design of the taillights was completely revised and now appeared in the so-called "Lexus design"

The interior has not changed much compared to the previous model. The third sun visor above the interior mirror was removed and replaced by a narrow glare strip on the windshield. The dashboard was now generally made of hard plastic, while in the predecessor in the higher equipment lines it was made of foamed plastic. The leather steering wheel, which is available at an additional cost, and in later model years the standard steering wheel, have been redesigned.

The possible special equipment was supplemented by ParkPilot , tire pressure monitoring system and coming home function and the cassette radios available in the predecessor were replaced by a CD radio, which was optionally also available with the option of playing MP3 files.

Special models

From January 2006 to July 2006, on the occasion of the 2006 soccer World Cup in Germany, the special model Goal was offered, which was equipped as standard with CD radio, cruise control , air conditioning , multifunction display and ParkPilot .

The second special model Tour or Tour Edition , offered in cooperation with the tourism company TUI , had ESP , sliding roof (only Tour Edition) and darkened side and rear windows (only Tour Edition) in addition to the basic equipment already offered for the Special model Goal and was available until September 2007 built.

From October 2007 the special model United was offered, which supplemented the basic equipment already contained in the previous special model with heated front seats and headlamp cleaning system.

From spring 2008, the two special models Black Edition and Silver Edition were offered in addition to the United , which included the standard equipment of the Polo with CD radio, ESP, air conditioning, darkened side and rear windows, front headlights with black housing (Black Edition only) and 16 -Inch alloy wheels extended. Both models were only available with black or silver paintwork.

As part of the sponsorship of the two football clubs FC Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen , two corresponding special models of the Polo were produced as small series. The Polo S04 Edition , painted in the color summer blue and provided with gray and white design elements, was presented at the “Schalke Tag” on July 20, 2008, the white, black or silver painted Polo Werder Edition on August 3, 2008, the “Tag of the fans ”, in the Weser Stadium in Bremen . Both models have lettering and logos of the respective club in different places inside and outside.

Model variants

In the course of time, different versions of the revised Polo IV model were brought onto the market, which differed from the normal production version not only in terms of modified basic equipment, but also in some cases had a modified body or an engine that was not available for the normal model.

CrossPolo

VW CrossPolo (2006-2008)

The CrossPolo was developed under the leadership of Volkswagen Individual and was presented at the Essen Motor Show in November 2005 . It is the successor to the Polo Fun and was built from February 2006. Like its predecessor, the CrossPolo was only available with five doors and outwardly differs from the normal version of the Polo by its off-road look, reminiscent of an SUV , with its own front and rear apron, plastic covers on the fenders, sills and doors, roof rails, standard fog lights and 17 -Inch alloy wheels. The roof rails and exterior mirror housings are always painted silver, regardless of the exterior color of the vehicle. The standard equipment included sports seats for the driver and front passenger, a leather steering wheel and central locking with radio remote control. The engines available were petrol engines with 47, 55 or 74 kW (later 51, 59 and 77 kW) and diesel engines with 51 and 74 kW output.

As standard, the vehicles have a chassis with around 15 millimeters more ground clearance and tighter tuning, which was also available for the normal series at an additional cost, but are only partially suitable for off-road use due to the lack of all-wheel drive.

Like the Polo Fun, the CrossPolo was initially equipped with light alloy wheels from BBS . As of the 2008 model year, which began in May 2007, the vehicles were, however, fitted as standard with 17-inch alloy wheels from Volkswagen Individual after BBS in early 2007 due to acute liquidity shortage a bankruptcy petition had asked. The BBS light alloy wheels were still available on request at no extra charge.

Polo BlueMotion

VW Polo BlueMotion (2006-2009)

The Polo BlueMotion was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in spring 2006 and was available from summer 2006. With it, the BlueMotion concept was introduced at Volkswagen , which over time has been expanded to include all model series of the brand. The aim is to optimize the fuel consumption and pollutant emissions of the vehicles.

For this purpose, the Polo BlueMotion has an aerodynamically optimized body with spoilers at the front and rear, an almost closed radiator grille and a lowering of around 15 millimeters. The surcharge for the comparable standard model was EUR 850 (as of January 2009). The 5-speed manual transmission has a longer gear ratio in gears 3 to 5 compared to the identical motorized normal variant in order to lower the engine speed and thus lower fuel consumption. For the same reason, the idle speed was also reduced. The coming exclusively used 3- cylinder - TDI engine with 59 kW output is standard to improve the emission values with a particulate filter fitted.

By combining these measures, the average consumption is 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers, which corresponds to a consumption advantage of 0.7 liters compared to the identically motorized production version. The CO 2 emission is 99 grams per kilometer about 20 grams under the value of the normal range.

Polo GT Rocket

VW Polo GT Rocket (2008-2009)

The Polo GT Rocket was available from spring 2008 and differs optically from the normal production model with spoilers on the front and rear, roof spoiler, widened side skirts, front headlights with black housings and 17-inch alloy wheels. The basic equipment was supplemented with CD radio, ESP, air conditioning, fog lights, darkened side and rear windows and sports suspension with a lowering of around 15 millimeters. The vehicles were only available with petrol engines from 59 to 77 kW and diesel engines from 59 to 96 kW.

Polo GTI

VW Polo GTI (2006-2009)

After a GTI sports version was last available in the third generation of the Polo , a corresponding model variant, the Polo GTI , was offered again from spring 2006.

Visually, this model differs from the normal series version in that the front section is partially painted black, a radiator grille in a honeycomb structure with a red decorative border, front headlights with a black housing, standard fog lights, unpainted sill extensions , red painted brake calipers , 16-inch alloy wheels, twin tailpipes made of stainless steel a roof spoiler.

On the technical side of a 1.8-liter has Otto engine with turbocharger equipped and 110 kW (150 hp) Polo GTI a sports suspension with about 15 millimeters lowering and used also when the 96 kW TDI engine brake system used with internally ventilated brake discs with a diameter of 288 millimeters on the front axle and 232 millimeters on the rear axle. The standard safety equipment includes ESP and a tire pressure monitoring system .

Polo GTI Cup Edition

VW Polo GTI Cup Edition (2006-2009)

From June 2006 Volkswagen Individual offered the even more powerful GTI Cup Edition variant with 132 kW (180 PS) in addition to the Polo GTI . Their visual appearance with aggressive front and rear aprons, widened side skirts, distinctive roof spoiler and 17-inch alloy wheels is derived directly from the vehicles used in the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup . Technically, however, the Polo GTI Cup Edition is based on the normal Polo GTI. The biggest difference in addition to the changed appearance is the brake system, which has been adapted to the increased performance, with a brake disc diameter of 312 millimeters on the front axle.

Polo Sedan (9N4)

VW Polo sedan (2005-2009)

The notchback variant was also subjected to a facelift in the spring of 2005 with the already from the hatchback equipped known front with a V-shaped grille and redesigned taillights. In contrast to its predecessor, however, it was not offered on the European market.

Engines

The petrol engines were taken with the introduction of the revised model unchanged from its predecessor. In the diesel engine , the 47 kW SDI engine , which only met the requirements of the Euro 3 emissions standard , was replaced by a TDI engine with 51 kW output and Euro 4 classification. The TDI engine with 55 kW was also replaced by a more powerful unit with 59 kW.

For the 2007 model year, which began in May 2006, the 63 kW FSI engine was omitted . The output of the 55 kW petrol engine in conjunction with the 5-speed manual transmission has been increased to 59 kW; in combination with the four- speed automatic transmission , however, the 55 kW engine was still used. The petrol engine with a displacement of 1.4 liters and an output of 74 kW was replaced by a unit with a displacement of 1.6 liters and 77 kW, which, in addition to the 5-speed manual transmission, could also be combined with a six- speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. With the exception of the most powerful unit with 96 kW, all diesel engines were now optionally available with a particle filter .

At the beginning of the 2008 model year in May 2007, the output of the two 3- cylinder petrol engines with a displacement of 1.2 liters and 40 kW and 47 kW output was increased to 44 kW and 51 kW respectively. The 55 kW petrol engine with four-speed automatic transmission was omitted; instead, the 59 kW engine was now also offered with a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

Polo Vivo (South Africa, since 2010)

In March 2010, the Polo Vivo was presented, which is intended to replace the previous entry-level Citi Golf on the South African market after its production was discontinued in early 2010. The Polo Vivo is based on the Polo IV, but has been optically modified primarily in the front area in order to match the current design language of the Volkswagen brand. The bumper strips in the front, rear and side areas were also removed as part of the revision. Like all vehicles for the South African market, the Polo Vivo is built exclusively as a right-hand drive with a kilometer speedometer. The vehicles are produced in the Volkswagen plant in Uitenhage and are available as a hatchback with three or five doors and as a sedan with four doors at prices starting at 101,500  Rand (around 10,000 euros), while the current model is much more expensive at just over 150,000 Rand . The Polo Vivo competes on the South African market against the Renault Sandero , which is also built in the country , the Chinese Geely LC and Chery QQ as well as the Datsun Go , Fiat Grande Punto , Ford Figo , Toyota Etios and Honda Brio imported from India .

Long-term quality

The body and build quality of the Polo IV is generally very good. Still, there are some weaknesses. In particular, the silentblocs on the front wishbone are very soft and prone to wear due to the steering, which is designed for high comfort. As a rule, they have to be replaced after approx. 60,000 to 80,000 km. VW has reacted to this design deficiency and offers the silentblocs in a reinforced version. There are also reports of damaged cylinder heads on the 1.2 three-cylinder engines. Since the exhaust gas back pressure is very high due to the catalytic converter being positioned very close to the engine, the cylinder head can heat up so much that it is damaged if the accelerator is frequently released .
