The VW Tharu is an SUV from Volkswagen that is based on the MQB platform and will initially only be sold in China .
history
The vehicle was presented as a near-series model VW Powerful Family SUV during the premiere of the VW Touareg III in March 2018. The series vehicle has been available in China since the end of October 2018. The Tharu is built by Shanghai Volkswagen . The VW Tayron , also launched in October 2018, is being built by the other Volkswagen joint venture, FAW-Volkswagen .
The Tharu is said to be the first Volkswagen model to be exported from China. It will also be built in Argentina , Mexico and Russia from 2020 . However, the car will not be offered in Europe.
background
The name of the SUV is reminiscent of the Tharu , a people living in Nepal and northern India. The VW Touareg , introduced in 2002, is named after the Tuareg who live in particular in the Sahara .
technology
The Tharu is based on the MQB A1 like the Seat Ateca, which has been built since 2016, and the Škoda Karoq, which was introduced in 2017 . With the latter, the SUV will be produced in China in the same plant. Visually, the Tharu is similar to the Seat Ateca and the VW Teramont .
For the production of the car, Volkswagen is cooperating with the headphone manufacturer Beats Electronics , which is why a Beats audio system is built into the Tharu as standard. The headphone manufacturer's logo can also be seen on the B-pillar.
The basic model of the Tharu has a twist beam axle , stronger versions a multi-link axle .
Technical specifications
To launch the SUV with a 1.4-liter was TSI - Otto engine with 110 kW (150 hp), or a two-liter gasoline engine with TSI 137 kW (186 hp). All variants have a 7-speed dual clutch transmission and front-wheel drive .
