history

prehistory

CrossBlue Coupé (2013)

In order to significantly increase sales in the booming SUV segment in the USA, Volkswagen needed a vehicle that was larger than the compact Tiguan , but less expensive than the Touareg luxury SUV . Externally, the Atlas is to be linked to VW's CrossBlue concept and will be the largest vehicle based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform and powered by four-cylinder transverse engines or V6 engines.

In January 2013, the Cross Blue study was presented at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit . The vehicle is equipped with a 2.0 liter TDI engine and a plug-in hybrid drive. In the same year, Volkswagen presented the CrossBlue Coupé , also an SUV with hybrid drive , at Auto Shanghai . In 2015, the North American International Auto Show presented the Cross Coupé GTE , which gave another outlook on the upcoming Atlas. In this vehicle, a 3.6 liter V6 gasoline engine was combined with a plug-in hybrid drive.

Atlas model year 2021

On July 14, 2014, Martin Winterkorn , CEO of Volkswagen AG, announced at a press conference in Wolfsburg that a “mid-size SUV” at the Chattanooga plant would complement the Passat (NMS) as a second model series from 2016 . To this end, 900 million US dollars are to be invested and 2000 new jobs are to be created.

The Atlas made its world premiere on October 27, 2016 on the Santa Monica Pier in California , and on November 18, 2016, it made its debut at the LA Auto Show . Series production began at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga on December 14, 2016. On January 8, 2017, Volkswagen presented the Atlas with R-Line package at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit , which should be available in the course of 2017. The Atlas has been on the US market since spring 2017. In the US, the atlas was first as a model year 2018 and only VR6 - petrol engine with 3.6 liter displacement and 206 kW (280 hp) and in the equipment variants Launch Edition , SE and SEL offered, each with front and all-wheel drive. The model range started at launch at $ 33,500 with the Launch Edition and front-wheel drive (as of June 2017). The atlas has been delivered to customers since mid-May 2017. The Atlas has also been available with a 2.0 liter engine in the USA since autumn 2017, but only as standard in the “S” equipment variant and with front-wheel drive, at a basic price of initially 30,500 US dollars. This new basic equipment variant "S" is also available with a VR6 engine, here with both front-wheel and all-wheel drive. The SE and SEL equipment variants with the 2.0 liter engine are also available to order, but only with front-wheel drive.

The series version of the Atlas Cross Sport is to be produced together with the seven-seat Atlas at the Chattanooga plant.
