The VW Tiguan I is a vehicle model from the German car manufacturer Volkswagen in the sport utility vehicle market segment that was sold between August 2007 and January 2016.

history

At the beginning of December 2006, Volkswagen presented a design study by its chief designer Murat Günak for a compact SUV at the Los Angeles Auto Show , which already showed great similarities with the later Tiguan. The series version was officially presented at the IAA 2007 in Frankfurt am Main .

The vehicle adopts numerous modules from the VW Golf and VW Passat model series , including the 4MOTION - all-wheel drive with Haldex clutch and the self-steering parking aid . Visually, the Tiguan is based on the VW Touareg ; Interior fittings and dimensions are based on the VW Golf Plus . The trunk volume is between 360 (with intermediate floor and emergency wheel) or 470 and 1510 liters (without spare wheel with the rear seats folded down).

The Tiguan is offered in the three equipment variants Trend & Fun , Sport & Style and Track & Field . The first two were designed for road use, the Track & Field variant also for use in easy terrain. The latter stands out visually from the other two thanks to a differently designed front bumper (this allows a slope angle of 28 ° compared to only 18 ° for the Trend & Fun and Sport & Style variants ); the three variants have different extensive standard equipment.

In China, the Tiguan has been available as a long version since 2010 (wheelbase 8 cm larger, overall length 4.54 m).

The long negotiations between VW management and the IG Metall union also aroused public interest in the Tiguan ; the latter wanted the originally planned production in Palmela (Portugal) at the VW subsidiary VW Autoeuropa Ltda. prevent. On September 27, 2005 it was announced that the Tiguan would be built by the company's subsidiary Auto 5000 GmbH in the main plant in Wolfsburg . The production of up to 130,000 units per year was planned.

Facelift

In July 2011 the Tiguan was revised ('Facelift'). Outward differences are the less curved headlights, modified front and rear aprons and modified rear lights.

Technical innovations related to the two petrol engines:

The 1.4 TSI with 110 kW (150 PS) discontinued at the beginning of 2011 was replaced with a facelift by an engine with 118 kW (160 PS).

The 2.0 TSI with 147 kW (200 PS) received a more economical engine with 155 kW (210 PS) as part of the facelift.

Half a year before the facelift, the small 2.0 TSI version with 125 kW (170 PS) was canceled. It was succeeded by an engine of the same displacement with 130 kW (177 hp).

In addition, a fourth equipment variant Track & Style was added, which transfers the additional equipment from Sport & Style to Track & Field .

Naming

The name “VW Marrakesh” has been circulating in the media for a long time. The name was introduced by a newspaper based on an earlier VW study and was adopted by many other media. The marketing department of Volkswagen tried for weeks in vain to stop the use of this false name. The official name at Volkswagen at that time was simply “compact off-road vehicle” or “compact SUV”; its name should not be announced until shortly before the market launch.

The made- up word "Tiguan", made up of the terms tiger and iguana , arose from a survey in Auto Bild magazine , the readers of which could vote on the name of the future vehicle until June 15, 2006. "Tiguan" prevailed with 36 percent of the votes against the alternatives " Nanuk ", " Namib ", "Rockton" and "Samun". The names "Marrakesh" and "Beduin" announced in advance were discarded.

safety

In the Euro NCAP crash test, the Tiguan achieved five out of five possible stars for occupant protection , four stars for child safety and two out of four stars for pedestrian protection .

Technical specifications

The internal designation of the Tiguan at Volkswagen is "Type 5N". Four gasoline engines from 90 to 147 kW (122–200 hp) and three diesel engines from 81 to 125 kW (110–170 hp) are available as engines. Completely new developments are the 2.0-liter TDI engines with common rail injection , which are equipped with a particulate filter as standard and have been factory-compliant with the Euro 5 emissions standard since April 2009 . Volkswagen offers an update of the engine control software for vehicles previously sold that also fell below the required exhaust emission limits but were delivered before the Euro 5 standard came into force; then these can be rewritten to the Euro 5 standard. The entry-level petrol engine is a 1.4-liter TSI engine with 90 kW (122 hp), while the diesel engine is a 2.0-liter TDI engine with 81 kW (110 hp).

When it was launched, the Tiguan was initially only available with 4Motion all-wheel drive . In the meantime, models with the 1.4-liter TSI engine with 110 kW output and the 2.0-liter TDI engine with 81 kW with front-wheel drive can be ordered. The 103 kW diesel engine and the two 125 kW and 147 kW petrol engines are optionally available with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission (until June 2010 with a 6 -speed automatic transmission with torque converter ).

Diesel engines

The widely used EA189 engines hit the headlines around the world in 2015 as part of the VW emissions scandal . The Cologne Regional Court ruled in December 2017 that VW had fraudulently deceived its customers in this regard.
