The VW Ameo is a small car with a short notchback built by Volkswagen in India . It is the first Volkswagen model specially designed for India and planned and built in India. The development was necessary for various reasons. On the one hand, there is the Indian preference for limousine forms, which the local VW Polo Sedan / Vento based on the Polo does, but which is too expensive compared to competitive products. Furthermore, vehicles in India that are shorter than four meters are taxed less.
The vehicle was manufactured in the Volkswagen factory in Chakan near Pune . The Ameo is powered either by a 1.2-liter gasoline engine or a 1.5-liter diesel engine.
The small car was presented in India on February 2, 2016; it is based on the PQ25 platform of the Polo V . It was sold in India between June 2016 and April 2020.
With a base price of 513,864 Indian rupees (August 2016: approx. 6885 EUR), it is the VW model with the lowest base price internationally.
