The VW Taro is a pickup from the Volkswagen brand , which was built under license from the Toyota Hilux from 1989 to 1995 at the VW plant in Hanover and from 1995 to 1997 at the Volkswagen plant in Emden .
The Taro was available with rear-wheel and all-wheel drive . The conventionally powered Taro had a driver's cab with up to three seats. The all-wheel drive model was available with different superstructures: with two front seats, as an XtraCab model with two full and two emergency seats and as a double cabin with five or six seats (either two continuous bench seats in front and rear or two single seats in the front and one continuous bench in the rear). The loading area decreases with the length of the cabin, whereby the XtraCab model with almost five meters in length exceeded the other two, almost equally long models by 25 cm.
The all-wheel drive model had a front axle that could be switched on via a transfer case if required. In addition, the front wheels had to be manually coupled to the freewheel hubs .
The 4 × 4 also has a reduction that allows a top speed of around 60 km / h in fifth gear. Production started in April 1989, and the Taro was built until March 1997.
The payload is approximately one ton , depending on the version .
While VW only served the segment of a potentially off-road pickup with the VW Amarok in the 2010 model year , Toyota continues to manufacture the Hilux in progressive model generations.
