VW Passat
VW Passat is the name for a car - model of the middle class of the brand Volkswagen the same vehicle group .
Model history
The original version ( B1 ) was derived from the Audi 80 presented in autumn 1972 and presented as a hatchback model in spring 1973. With its water-cooled engines and front-wheel drive, the vehicle differs fundamentally from its predecessor (VW 1500/1600) with air-cooled engines and rear-wheel drive. At the beginning of 1974 VW pushed a station wagon version of the Passat called Variant .
With the eight Passat generations to date, the car has grown steadily; the current Passat ( B8 ) is 4.77 meters long and 1.83 meters wide, significantly larger than the first model (4.20 meters long, 1.60 meters wide Meter). By April 2007, over fifteen million copies of the VW Passat, the VW Dasher and the related VW Santana had been built. This makes the Passat ninth among the most frequently built cars in the world.
In mid-2008, the Passat CC, a four-door “Coupé” version, was launched.
The sedan with notchback and the estate version Variant are currently offered , with the latter being much more in demand (sales share over 70%). In 2004 the VW Passat was the most widespread company and service vehicle in Germany. In 2011, 86.1% of all new registrations in Germany were commercial. In 2006 a total of 124,611 vehicles were newly registered.
North America has had its own model since 2011, the Passat (NMS) (“New Midsize Sedan”). This is manufactured by the Volkswagen Group of America Chattanooga Operations in Tennessee . This model has also been produced in China since 2012, but is offered there parallel to the current European model.
According to newspaper reports, VW plans to phase out production of the Passat in Germany in 2022. At times one in five VWs sold was a Passat, today only one in ten. The falling demand led to 19 days of short-time work at the Emden plant in 2018.
particularities
The installation direction of the engine has been repeatedly changed on the Passat. Up to the B2 series it had engines installed lengthways, so that the series five- cylinder engines, which were known from the Audi 80/90 series (type 81/85) and designed for lengthways installation, could be used in the B2 . With the B3 / B4 series, there was a switch to transversely mounted engines; The six-cylinder VR engine intended for transverse installation was developed as the top engine . With the model change to the B5 series, there was again the switch to longitudinal installation so that the Audi V6 engine could be accommodated. A W8 variant, an eight-cylinder engine, was also available. When changing to the B6 series, there was another change to transverse mounting, which is why the current six-cylinder VR engine was the top engine from then on.
Surname
The Passat was originally developed as an EA (development order) 400 and was to come onto the market as the "Type 511". During conversations at the VW plant, the idea of names instead of numbers came up, which made all thoughts of type numbers superfluous. The name of the model series in the EU is borrowed from the eastern trade winds , which have been important for seafaring and air traffic on the equator because of their persistence since Columbus and the early modern era. Volkswagen repeated this type of naming with the model names Scirocco , Jetta , Santana and Bora .
Manufacturing plants
The Passat was manufactured in the Volkswagen plant in Salzgitter from 1973 to 1975, and in the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg from 1974 to 1977 . The Passat has been built in Germany at the Volkswagen factory in Emden since 1977 and at the Volkswagen factory in Zwickau since 1992 . The VW Passat CC / VW CC was also manufactured in Emden from 2008 to 2016 . The VW Arteon has been built in its place since 2017 .
