The VW Vento (type 1H2) was presented in Brussels in January 1992 as the successor to the Jetta II . With the new name, the manufacturer hoped for a change of image for the vehicle and an increase in sales, especially for the German market. In the non-European countries (especially in the USA) the new model was still offered under the name VW Jetta , as the name had proven itself there. In the USA, the Golf and Jetta were both known internally as 1HM, with the M standing for Mexico, the production location for the US market.
Model history
General
The vehicle was technically identical to the Golf III and - like the previous models - a notchback version of the Golf. Apart from the 36 cm longer body, the Vento differs from the Golf III with angular headlights, a differently designed radiator grille, a slightly modified dashboard (up to and including model year 1994), better standard equipment (with, among other things, painted front and rear aprons, 14 "- Wheels, white indicator glasses at the front and a different inner door panel).
The Vento was produced exclusively as a four-door model. A two-door model variant like the two previous Jetta models had been discarded because there had been hardly any demand for such a vehicle type in the main sales markets since the end of the 1980s. An all-wheel drive version called Syncro was also no longer offered.
Initially there were four gasoline engines (1.8 l with 75 PS (55 kW), 1.8 l with 90 PS (66 kW), 2.0 l with 115 PS (85 kW) and 2.8 l VR6 with 174 PS (128 kW)) and two diesel engines (1.9 l with 60 PS (44 kW) and 1.9 l with 75 PS (55 kW)) available. The 1.6 l with 75 PS (55 kW) followed in the summer of 1992. The 1.4 l basic engine of the Golf III with 60 PS (44 kW) and the 2.0 l 16V engine with 150 PS ( 110 kW) was not available for the Vento / Jetta III.
Six equipment versions were offered: Vento CL / CLX as basic versions, GL / GLX with emphasis on comfort, GT sporty, GTD sporty with a diesel engine and VR6 with a six-cylinder engine. In the USA the sportier versions were also called GT (previously GLI), as in Europe. The VR6 could be ordered there in a luxurious, more comfortable version as the GL and in a sporty version as the GT. For the first time, the GT engine with 115 hp was also available as an option for the GL version, here also in conjunction with a new four-speed automatic transmission. The version most ordered was the Vento GL; the most popular engine, the 1.8 l with 90 hp (66 kW).
Even so, demand in Europe for this model remained relatively modest, but the Jetta was again a success in North America. The trunk with a capacity of 550 liters and the space available are among the pluses of this model type.

- For the 1994 model year, a minor facelift with a new instrument cluster, new safety buttons, darkened rear lights in the VR6 version, new three-spoke radiator grille painted in the same color as the car, introduction of a standard anti-trap device for the power windows and / or the sunroof.
- November: New 1.9-liter TDI turbo diesel engine with 90 hp (66 kW) and direct injection.
- 1994
- Small technical changes for model year 1995:
- Standard electronic immobilizer ; At the same time the workshop key is no longer needed.
- Glove compartment with flap now also in connection with a passenger airbag.
- October: New 1.6-liter petrol engine with 100 hp (74 kW).
- 1995
- July: New 1.9 liter naturally aspirated diesel engine with 64 hp (47 kW) and direct injection.
- September: Small facelift with modified steel wheels, taillights tinted as standard, a new “Happy Face” grille painted in the vehicle color in the style of the Passat , steel wheels painted black (previously in silver) and full wheel covers, new aluminum wheels, ABS as standard as well as electrically adjustable exterior mirrors and Electric windows, fully painted bumpers, from version CL painting of all outer plastic parts (except door handles) in vehicle color, rounded side indicators, dashboard of the Golf III. New model names: now CLX (previously CL) and GLX (previously GL), all others as before. GTD version no longer applicable, instead introduction of the GT TDI and additional new paintwork, standard headrests for the rear seats.

- New turbodiesel engine with direct injection (1.9 liters with 110 PS (GT (I) TDI, distinguishing feature red "I" in TDI ).

From plans for a station wagon of the model series, which was to be called Vento Variant , the Golf Variant was finally developed with the front design belonging to the Golf . A Vento Cabriolet was created by Hofele-Design in individual pieces based on the Golf III Cabriolet , it was presented in September 1994 at the Automechanika in Frankfurt am Main. It was planned to offer a conversion - not least because of the gain in trunk space and the more pleasing appearance. The target was a conversion price of around 8,000 DM . However, this did not happen, but a few pre-production models were created.
